Nature vs Nurture is one of the oldest arguments in psychology. One side argues that we are born a certain way by taken certain genes and characteristics, such as physical features from our parents. The other side states it is in fact our environment that influences our behaviour; this includes the way we talk and respond to certain situations around us. Nature looks at biological factors and what we can inherit from our parents; this can include eye colour, nose shape, hair colour, height and many other physical features. It is thought that we may inherit these from one parent but can then inherit personality traits from the other. Nurture on the other hand focuses on our environment, it is thought the environment someone grows up in can have a lasting effect or in other words influence certain behaviours. Each side of the argument has valid points which many agree with but it is very difficult to separate nature and nurture to say one is more influential than the other. Most people will learn ethical norms from their family and social environments. In our society ethical norms can be considered as common sense, however we must understand that not all individuals will interpret ethics the same way, this is one of the reasons for differences in society. Today it is a norm for businesses and societies to have legal rules which govern behaviour. Ethical norms are not the same as legal laws as the tend to be much broader, ethics focus on standards of conduct. This can be seen within Psychology, Sociology, Law and Philosophy.
