Troy want’s Cory to get a job based of his feelings towards him playing football. Troy previously played baseball when he was younger and he feels it was unfair because Negros didn’t get much of a chance at sports. He is now apart of Corporal in the U.S. Marines and is thinking of getting married. I know for a fact Cory will be a different man his father was to him now that he has gotten older. Being in the marines will keep him disciplined and hopefully tame his anger. The marines were a good fit for Cory because of his life growing up. There’s a brotherhood in the marines where they can all lean and depend on one another without that fear of not having support. Cory states “Papa was like a shadow that followed you everywhere. It weighed on you and sunk into your flesh. It would wrap around you and lay there until you couldn’t tell which one was you anymore. That shadow digging in your flesh. Trying to crawl in trying to live through you.” This shows that Cory is just like his dad but he don’t know it or don’t want to admit it. His dad wanted him to be great at whatever he did just didn’t think he’d have the change to play football.
