Honor encompass the elements that make up the moral code we should all strive to live by, these include; integrity, ethics, honesty, truthfulness, public and personal responsibilities. Courage is defined as the value that gives a person the moral and mental strength to do what is right, with confidence and resolution, even in the face of temptation or adversity. Partnering with the Navy, Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh, deliver a fictional yet all too plausible tale told from the special operator’s point of view. Chock full of honor and military values, this film reaches out to the audience compelling them to take part in this ideology, and garners admiration for the soldiers willing to give all in service to their nation. In a time when most action movies are simply bringing an overload of gratuitous violence to audiences who are so inundated with Facebook and Google that they would scarcely know reality if it slapped them in the face, this film’s aim is to impart traditional values. After watching Act of Valor, did I want to run off and join the Navy? No, however, if a person did have these desires would that really be a bad thing, to yearn to serve one’s country and live according to this basic yet grand code of conduct? The author’s thesis is arguing that this is more than a story. It highlights America and Britain at a point of modernization. It reveals the realities inside an Army. Young people must grow up quickly and are forced away from their homes, where they make love and make war. Reynolds contends that the American GI’s were more than “over-sexed, over-fed, and over-here,” a stereotype impressed upon them.…

Mr. Lederer and Mr. Burdick wrote the Ugly American many decades ago and it is a story that holds many truths of how we act and operate in today’s society. This fictional work displayed characters that truly understood many of the Special Operation Forces (SOF) imperatives. Louis Krupitzyn, John Colvin and Major Wolchek represented the SOF imperatives of understanding the operational environment, anticipating and controlling psychological effects, operating with and through others, considering the long term effects, facilitating interagency activities, and engaging the threat discriminately. I will combine my own experiences and those of these three characters in The Ugly American. I will demonstrate how the SOF imperatives influenced their behavior and how I approached situations during my time in Special Forces.…

The first part of this movie is an accurate representation of recruit training, enforcing the well known mantra “tear down then build up.” Present in this leadership style widely in use still today, is the idea of a ‘rite of passage’ in the journey from boyhood to manhood; as the subject becomes ‘worthy’ of a more masculine title. Leonard, “Private Pile,” falls victim to Gunnery Sergeant Hartman who is tasked with turning civilians into Marines. Sergeant Hartman immediately sees Leonard as weak, overweight, and unworthy of being a Marine. Time and time again, Leonard fails objectives and is subject to Hartman’s punishment. This punishment suggests that the more masculine, dominate male is superior to the lesser individual and suggests that there is an imbalance between the tiers of masculinity. It becomes the role of the superior to instill in the subordinates a manly demeanor brimming with testosterone filled masculinity.…

Coming from humble beginnings as the son of Dominican immigrants, I began my indoctrination into the Navy way of life at an early age. It was from these beginnings that I was instilled with a strong sense of family, loyalty, determination, devotion and trust. I am the youngest person in my family to obtain a bachelor’s degree, the first to enlist into the United States Navy, and I aspire to be the first to achieve my M.A.S. in Criminology. I owe this solid foundation and structure to the influence of my father’s devotion and to the Navy’s guiding principles of honor, courage, and commitment. Despite being full time as an Active Duty member of the United States Navy and working countless hours as a Naval Special Warfare Armorer, I worked diligently…

Customs and Courtesies The Army of today is an extremely traditional community with a varying and extreme amount of customs, and has literally thousands of ways of conducting its business. Some have aged well with time, and the ones that haven’t have been updated to accommodate the changing tides of societal custom. Although many have been altered so as to suit the current demanding trends of modern day change, possibly the oldest of the traditions is still alive today in the United States Armys rules, regs, customs, and courtesies. The seven Army values are among the most important main fundamentals of the Armys way of life, alongside those being our traditional customs and courtesies. The Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do have been the basic framework for my personal leadership philosophy of leading by example.1 I am proud of my Air Force background and those values have shaped life both personally and professionally. I joined the Air Force right out of high school and early on in my career I was fortunate to have been mentored by a two commanders that not only spoke of the Air Force core values, but also lived by them. I did not actually realize how ingrained those core values were until I started taking traditional college business classes. I pulled from my Air Force experiences and those core values repeatedly for group projects and papers I had to write for classes.…
