“My God, girl. Must you always wear that disgusting uniform?” he mother said.

She loved the antique store. The stories the furniture told, with its’ various shades of hard wood and oak. She ran her finger through the dust and smiled. Each piece was a bit of history, a history she had never experienced with her mother’s expensive tastes. Her friend’s apartment was a tangle of plants, hanging from every corner. Dangling down, long tendrils of Jack in the Beanstoalk style leaves, hanging to the floor. Next to Ficus trees spurting new growth. Bean bag chairs with velveteen patchwork quilting covers. She glanced at the envelope from Sister Carlotta O'Donnell, the head school mistress. She thought about hiding the letter. Would her parents hear about it if she hid the note? There was the note sealed inside of the school’s envelope. She could barely make out the dark writing of the school’s stationary, inside. She peeled the flap away from the envelope carefully, trying not to rip it. Did her father have to sign it? She laid it down.
A paper from the boy she called Gravy Eyes, a local boy that she had a secret crush on said, “It’s at Crissy Field, Marcy. In front of the airplane hangars.” For a girl that had never even had her first kiss, she was reeling with excitement. Gravy Eyes. His real name was Skip Richardson. But, those damned eyes always seemed to be peering furtively at her and they were the color of gravy. And she loved it! He glanced quickly at her and turned, and her heart did a free fall. He looked again and she felt a hidden message exchanged. She never felt anything like those looks before.

Peter slammed his office door and ruptured another splinter on its face like the thousands that plagued it. His shaky hands fixed three locks across the door that jarred into their familiar cradles. He dragged his chair through the cracked grooves in the floorboards and collapsed into it with a sigh. The paperwork on his desk was minimal. It was the nightmare garden he tended to every night once the children were dreaming, and his wife curled against her own skin, embraced by icy cotton sheets. Octavia rented a two-bedroom apartment in the city of Paterson. Octavia kept her apartment organized. Everything was its rightful place. Nothing was thrown about hap-hazard like in Juliet’s studio apartment in South Shore. The light grey walls of the living room had accents of light pinks, blues, and silvers. The sofa and love seat were an elegant silver topped with pale pink throw pillows. The large television on the wall faced the grey couch. Surrounding the TV was various, simple paintings in dark frames. A glass coffee table was in front of the sofa. Neatly stacked magazines were on top of the clear…

Inside the cottage, Maggie sat at the table. The cigarette still hung loosely from her fingers. Her skin had browned and grown tight around her bones as it dried with age. Her head had shrunk considerably, the empty sockets of her eyes receding deep within. Maggie’s stomach, where the Coroner had crudely sewn her back together, had pulled apart at the stiches leaving gaping diagonal crevices. The wedding dress they buried her in was wrinkled. Her hair, while wiry, laid neatly groomed. Sam, having taken her brush from the bathroom, had done it before…

Gone was the quick, flashing eye that irritated my sensibilities and quickened my heart when we were younger. Her beauty had faded into a shadow of her brilliance during those winter nights in society. That evening on the hallowed grounds of our meeting place, she picked her steps slowly, content to leave her hand in mine. Her gaze was melancholy, solemn. They were worldly eyes. They had seen a darker side of existence.…

Sitting in Mrs. Arnett’s second grade classroom, my next door neighbor Charles is behind me, pulling my hair. I turn around to yell at him. I am so sick of Charles bothering me – he loves to pull my hair and jab sharp pencils in my back. After threatening to tell on him, he finally let go of my hair. As I turned back to my desk, Mrs. Arnett called my name. “Daniela, it is your turn for show and tell; what do you have for us today?” I remember thinking, “Oh my god, it’s my turn, YES! I can’t wait to tell everybody just how special I really am!”…

Forty years of decline and decay, decisions made, money paid, much to be gained as restoration is to begin, windows replaced, rusty tracks turned shiny again, wood turned concrete as the sleepers were replaced, graffiti became mosaic tiles, must became fragrance and dull became vibrance, grit became shine, and disused became used and indeed much was…
