ROMEO AND JULIET: Act IV
Scene 1:
1. Why is Friar Laurence reluctant to marry Paris to Juliet?
Friar Laurence is reluctant to marry Paris to Juliet as he knows that Juliet is already married to Romeo. He also infers from Paris’s and Juliet’s conversation that she is just faking her love for Paris in order to please her father.
2. How does Paris explain the sudden haste of the marriage plans?
He says that Capulet worries that his daughter is grieving too much over her cousin’s death and he thinks that Juliet needs to be quickly married to someone so she will stop her crying.
3. What is ironic about the conversation between Juliet and Paris?
The irony is that everything Juliet is saying has a different meaning than what Tybalt understands. It refers to her and Romeo’s love sometimes, while Tybalt thinks she is talking about himself.
4. If Friar Laurence cannot help her, what does Juliet threaten to do?
Juliet threatens to kill herself if Friar Laurence cannot help her.
5. Which two meanings of the word “long” does Juliet use to make a pun?
Juliet uses the two meanings of long as in a craving, and as an extended period of time.
6. Why does Friar Laurence think that Juliet will accept his plan?
Because Juliet previously said that she would be willing to kill herself if the Friar didn’t have a plan. She would do anything to see Romeo again.
7. Describe the friar’s plan for Juliet.
The friar’s plan is to give Juliet the vial of coma inducing serum. After she wakes up from the coma, Romeo will be there to take her to Mantua.
8. What information does Juliet have that Romeo does not? How does the dramatic convention of dramatic irony enhance the text?
Juliet has the information that she will soon be in a coma and not actually dead while Romeo doesn’t know that. This enhances the text as there is a buildup of suspense in the irony intertwined in the knowledge of each character. Each
