“misstep” and “impatient” man, Shakespeare conveys the theme that loyalty can bring tragedy, despite good intentions.
The first mistake that the Friar did to cause the death of Romeo and Juliet is when the Friar gave a vial that made the individual look like they died from an unknown source. When Juliet was heartbroken because Romeo was banished, she ask the Friar for help on getting away from both her marriage and family so that she could be with Romeo. The Friar did assist her, but little did they know is that after she drank the vial Romeo was on his way to find her: “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distillèd liquor drink thou off, When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor, for no pulse Shall keep his native progress, but surcease.” ( 4.1. 96 - 100 ) The logic of adding this quote was a result of explaining the first step of how the Friar cause the death of Romeo and Juliet. As well as shows that the Friar was too risking and making a lot of mistakes like making sure that the plan is in place, rather than checking if it had any flaws to it, to which it did.
Further statement involving the fault of Friar Lawrence is when he sent someone else to send the letter rather than himself to Romeo. After Juliet fake her own death, the Friar did what he can on messaging Romeo about the plan of how all of this is going to go down, by sending his friend Friar John to do it for him. When his accomplice finally came back he didn’t give Romeo the letter because he was cornered because of an quarantine happening on Mantua: “Where the infectious pestilence did reign, Seal'd up the doors and would not let us forth. So that my speed to Mantua there was stayed.” ( 5.2. 10 - 12 ) and “I could not send it here it is again (gives FRIAR LAWRENCE a letter) Nor get a messenger to bring it thee,So fearful were they of infection.” ( 5.2 14 -17 ) The reason why these quotes were added was because it foreshadowed the tragedy that will soon happen to both Romeo and Juliet in the play. It further shows that the Friar was to impatience on taking matters to his own hand, because if he alone send the letter to Romeo, then none of this would have happened.
Finally the last fact that shows that the Friar is to blame is when he fled at Juliet’s tomb instead of helping her.
After the Friar found out that both Romeo and Paris had died. He went to check on Juliet who was depressed because of the sight she was seeing. The Friar tried to persuade Juliet into coming with him to the sisterhood of holy nuns. Instead he ran away because someone was coming near Juliet’s tomb, to which caused the death of Juliet: “Come, come away. Thy husband in thy bosom there lies dead, And paris too. Come, I’ll dispose of thee, Among a sisterhood of holy. Stay not to question, for the watch is coming. Come, go, good Juliet, I dare no longer stay.” ( 5.3 166 - 171 ) and “ go, get out of here, I’m not going anywhere, ( Exit Friar Lawrence ).” ( 5.3 172 ) The quotes that were added were involved in the topic, because it shows that the Friar was too afraid and ran off without knowing the choices that he had just made. It also shows that the Friar made the error of leaving Juliet alone with Romeo’s dagger in her tomb: “O happy dagger, This is thy sheath. There rust and let me die. (stabs herself with ROMEO’s dagger and dies)” ( 5.3 182 - 184 ) as well as being too eager to leave. If he just use brute force or give her that charm then maybe she would have went with him and that the death of another child would have not
happened.
Overall the morale of the topic is that someone can bring tragedy to the person despite them trying to help them. However the Friar was responsible for killing Romeo and Juliet, because of many misfires that he made like his plan on getting rid of Juliet’s problems, letting a messenger boy give the letter to Romeo rather than himself, and leaving without thinking twice on the choices that he made. The way that this topic affects the world is that not many people know the damage that they’ve done, despite the fact that they are only trying to help.
