a reality that others created for her and projects her fear of being left behind by men in her life by
resorting to necrophilia. Emily does what she wants and doesn't acknowledge the leading
authorities in town, she thinks that the laws apply to everyone but her. She fears the loss of the
men in her life. Since her controlling dads death. She has found a way to make sure those men
will never leave.
Emily lives in her own reality, that others helped construct.Emily’s father kept her sheltered
from the company of men. We see evidence of this by the narration of the people in the town“her
father which had thwarted her woman's life so …show more content…
many times”(Act4,p5) Her father also ruled with a
iron first,more appropriately, a horsewhip.
“father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his
back to her and clutching a horsewhip”(act2) In this passage we get a sense of what kind of man
Emily’s father was. We see this “horsewhip” symbolize his control over Emily and all aspects of
her life. Her father laid the foundation for her reality, where she held her status higher than the
rest. Colonel Sartoris is the one who put the imaginary gears of Emily’s reality in momentum.
“Colonel Sartoris invented an involved tale to the effect that Miss Emily's father had loaned
money to the town”(Act1,p3) This is the lie that let Emily live in this fantasy for so long. It
enabled her to do whatever she wanted, how she wanted till the end. When the new generation of
city authorities attempted several times to get Emily to pay the taxes and after all their attempts
they decided to show at her house the last time to collect. We see that Emily has “ Vanquished
them, horse and foot”(Act2.p1). She defeats them completely, metaphorically destroying their
horse soldiers and their foot soldiers. They give up with her, allowing her to never face the truth
and let her live the rest of her life in this reality that her father and Colonel Sartoris
helped
construct.
After Emily’s father dies, Emily changes, in a very subtle way that is not fully realized
till the end. After being controlled by her father, the only man in her life, that control is projected
and warped on to her. She tries to cling and control her father's corpse until they took it away to
burry. “ We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with
nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will.”(act2 p1)
