“What Adolescents Miss When we let them grow Up in Cyberspace” written by Brent Staples is a great essay and has many strong points. But I’m going to disagree with this one. The fact that staples has argued that the internet is taking over teenagers social life has offended me and my generation. I differ with his arguments. I believe that the internet has made today’s teenagers more socialize and more connected than ever. Facebook, msn, gmail, twitter etc is a great tool for teenagers to stay in touch and makes it easier for each of them to communicate. The internet is a great tool for teenagers to meet and make new friends around the world. I believe that the internet has made teenagers more attentive than before. Let’s use twitter as an example. Twitter is a social site where you and other people update your status. It is a site where you can check what your friends are doing at the moment. It is a great tool to broadcast news to people (including teenagers who does not read or watch the news) without even turning the TV on or reading a long article from a newspaper. It is a wonderful site to keep each individual updated and informed with each other and around the world.…

When it comes to the topic of social media, most of us will agree that it is good. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is when some think that social media is bad because we use it too much and the same group of people think that it is bad because of cyberbullying. As a result, teens often put themselves in very dangerous situations because they do not think about the consequences of their actions. In the article “Big Brother Meets Big Mother,” Ellen Goodman states, “But even if kids aren't wandering in the neighborhood, they are wandering in the Internet with all of its unknown cul-de-sacs.What teenagers claim as MySpace, parents often see as an unmonitored public zone that leads predators to their doorstep.” (1). In agreement with Goodman, teens view many pieces content that might be beyond their emotional maturity. These teens could be talking to a criminal or even a well known sex offender. For this reason, parents have the right to violate their teens privacy even if they do not suspect they are doing something wrong. To also agree with Goodman: “At the same time, parents are expected to know and control everything their children watch, eat, do - where they are, who they are texting, what channels and websites they are viewing”(1). Parents need to take control: they are parents, not friends to their children. They have a duty to make sure their teen is safe and not talking to individuals who could potentially harm them. However, this is not the only danger, if parents do not monitor their teen’s screens, activities such as sharing private body parts online, bullying and even posting personal information could potentially harm them or others.…
