Objective: To write a persuasive essay on how this generation’s family relationships are affected by technology, specifically by computers using proper grammar and language use.
Know Your Priorities
As most of us know by now, technology has affected us in both negative and positive ways. It has certainly made our lives easier and convenient in more ways than one. Aside from the useful software and applications for work, we also gained access to entertaining forms of technological advancement such as online games and social networking. As much as it is fun and enjoyable, one could end up neglecting other important priorities such as family bond.
“One thing that appears clear is that computers are instruments of isolation; while it’s true they can be used to communicate with others, more often than not, that communication is with people that are not part of the family; thus, time spent on the computer is time spent apart from those people that love you most in the world.” Says Sam E. Jones on his article, How technology can affect a family. From his words, it is clear that he implies how families grow apart through the lack of verbal communication. Communication is vital in order to keep a healthy relationship of any kind and …show more content…
for it to be inadequate could lead to serious bad blood between family members.
One would think that I am only referring to the children, specifically the teenagers of the family but this also applies to the adults. As a personal experience being a daughter of a business man and an on-duty doctor, a lot of family outings were cancelled due to conflicting schedules and when we do get to go out like any regular family, their phones would always be ringing left and right filled with emails and messages from work. I was fortunate enough to somehow keep a healthy relationship with my parents however, not everyone is in the same boat as me.
It is completely understandable that they are doing it to provide for their family, yes but what could be the consequence of reading a 10 paged email from one’s boss during his or her daughter’s spelling competition? The child would somehow engrave it in his or her mind how mommy would not be paying attention anyway Or Dad would be too busy talking to his boss to take pictures so why bother inviting them? The child would feel like there is a barrier between him or her and his or her parents, therefore drifting away from them. Teenagers these days have this tendency to be resentful of their parents claiming that they are misunderstood and that their parents hate them. More often than not, this is caused by the feeling of neglect and miscommunication.
As childish it may seem competitive games can also lead to strains in the relationship.
Video games can be used as a bonding tool between the family members yet sometimes, a simple game can get very heated and lead to full blown arguments and result to temper tantrums and or physical violence. Video games in general can be addicting which result many gamers to be very passionate about their plays. There has actually been an occurrence where a 13 year old boy killed his 16 year old brother over a video game. To be fair, it is not the game that caused this senseless violence, however this incident shows just how far this kind of addiction can lead
to.
I am not saying that people should give up computers and video games completely but I am simply implying that people need to sort out their priorities and remember that there are more important things in life. When one loses everything they have and hit rock bottom, the only place one shall fall back on is their family. While there is still time to spend, use it to be with your loved ones every once in a while without having a gadget on your hands. Life can be cruel and it may take away some things that you did not know you have until you lose it.
