Many feel new ruling punishes LGBT parents by singling out their kids
Changes to the Mormon Church rules have caused gay Mormon parents to worry about the state of their children’s salvation due to a recent announcement being put out to church leaders.
The new church handbook states that being in a same sex marriage means the possibility of being kicked out of the Mormon religion and that children of gay parents must wait until they reach the age of 18 before they can be baptized in the Mormon church and disavow homosexual relationships. The children also can’t receive blessings as babies or be involved in missions.

Additionally, church leaders said the changes were driven by questions that have come up since same sex marriage was made legal by the Supreme Court all over the US.

Church officials also said there was a need to distinguish between what is legal in the eyes of the state and what is allowed in the eyes of the church, according to the Mormon church’s governing body, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The revisions were made, they say, in order to protect children from having to choose between what their gay Mormon parents teach them and what the church teaches them.
If the children do as the new guideline state once they turn 18, they will no longer be allowed to live with gay parents and after approval from their local Mormon leader they can be baptized and go on church missions.
