Berfore David thomsan came to New Hampshire, others had explored the area. The first white people to visit the area could have been Norse seafarers in the 11th century or 15th century Europeans fishing in North American waters. The first recoreded visit was Martin Pring, an English sea captin/explorer. He only ventured a short way into the interior( but still managed to glimpse and write of the fantastic wildlife in the area.) In 1605 Samuel de Champlain mapped the coastline for France, and later on in 1614 Captain John Smith repeated the process for the English.
The first settlement in New Hampshire was in the year. a scotsman by the name of David Thomsan arrived at Odiorne’s Point along with a few other settlers. Thomsan began setting up fishing operations, farms and a trading post. Thomsan left for what is currently Boston Massachusetts, and any remaining settlers were drawn to Strawbery Banke*, which was settled in about 1630. Edward Hilton was another memorable person to contribute to the rise of New Hampshire. He arrived form Londo and made a settlement in Dover.
In the year 1638, Exeter and Hampton were settled making Dover, Portsmouth, Exeter and Hampton the only permanent settlements in new hampshire up until 1673 when Dunstable Massachusetts was founded. When the boundary between the two provinces of New Hampshire an massachusetts was drawn in 1741, part of Dunstable became Nashua, New hampshire.
Several conflicting Land grants were made, resulting in two Englishmen Captain John Mason and Sir Fernando HOrges receiving a grant from the Council for New England for the land between Merrimack and Kennebec rivers. **Gorges received the land to the east of the Piscataqua (maine), and Mason named his New Hampshire*** when Mason died in 1635 his heirs in England allowed others to occupy land that was a part of his grant. In 1660, Mason’s grandson finally claimed the territory and land title disputes erupted. The controversy**** was not
