New York Daily News Summary
I read an article published by San Jose Mercury News regarding a crime committed by an illegal immigrant. Authorities in San Fransisco, California, which people consider as a “sanctuary city”, wouldn’t hand over a certain illegal immigrant to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Additionally, the illegal immigrant was very dangerous considering he had seven felonies and the U.S. deported him five times. While enjoying a sunny day with her beloved father, Kate Steinle was shot by this man on a popular pier in San Fransisco on July 1, 2015. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time an undocumented immigrant murdered or inflicted pain upon a U.S. citizen or their loved ones. Furthermore, many attended a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, which includes the Steinles, in Washington D.C. on July 21, 2015. During the hearing, many lawmakers and senators proposed bills in order to both block federal funding of …show more content…
Both stories cover the same historical event; however, each story explains the event differently and include various portions of the incident. New York Daily News’ story isn’t as well written as San Jose Mercury News’ story, and it doesn’t explain the measures everyone is taking in order to minimize the amount illegal immigrants, especially the felons, and protect the U.S. citizens. However, the story published by New York Daily News includes more detail about the testimonies of the affected citizens than the other. While San Jose Mercury News’ story presents all of the facts, considers the views of both the advocates of immigration rights and those against illegal immigration, and doesn’t add their opinion on the event, the article published by New York Daily News presents little information and gives the impression that there is little action being taken to resolve the issue. Considering those facts, the article published by San Jose Mercury News is less biased than New York Daily News’

The first article accurately describe the terrible horrors that Columbus spreads throughout the land, such as mass homicide, rape, enslavement and plenty more treacherous things that are illegal all over the world. The first article explains how Columbus came to America and the native Americans flocked him with beautiful and mysterious (to him and the Europeans) gifts and treated them like gods yet Columbus writes that the "Indians" are foolish and ignorant. He sees them like tools he says they are well fit and have handsome features so what does he do he enslaves them and cover them with deadly smallpox. Yet through horrid time in history people like Conell find a way to sugarcoat it and only say the "nice" subjects like finding America and spreading technology while people like Howard Zinn spread the ill coated truth of the birth of this great independent country's…

Both articles use the same material but have prioritised the two images differently. The Sun uses the image of the girl in large which with the headline shocks the audience and makes them feel sorry for the girl as she looks like a down to earth young woman. It makes you feel sympathy that this horrific event has happened to her and it shows that it could have happened to anyone. The Times uses the image of the house being tapped off with a police van and officer stood outside, with the headline it shows the audience reading that they have the situation under control, and makes you feel safe that they are there if a situation like…

The book Showdown in the Sonoran Desert by Ananda Rose was written to bring to light the issue of morality that underlies the controversial immigration debate, particularly the issue of immigrant deaths along the desert of Mexico and the United States. Hundreds of migrants, in an attempt to cross into the United States, lose their lives in the rough environment of the desert. As American citizens, many who are of Hispanic descent are forced to support one side or the other of the controversial debate. Either we support the federal law which rejects any action supporting or aiding an illegal immigrant or we dismiss the law and aid those immigrants in need to prevent possible deaths. Most Americans when faced with such debate, will most likely…

The authors of The Independent and Fox News had different audiences, which caused difference in their purpose of the articles. The Independent did a better job at using the information they had for this event and displaying it to their audience in an emotional and logical way, and also expanding on the topic and getting into the bigger picture. The Independent also includes many facts and quotes from trust worthy people that overall help it seem like a more reliable source to the reader. The Independent is the stronger article between the two, because of the appeals and depth they use in their…

One of the most obvious untrue assumptions surrounding immigrants is that Latinos are more prone to crime than their American counterparts. Rivera confronts the question of whether immigrants are committing crimes at higher rates than U.S. citizens. The debate started with a story about a drunk driver in Virginia Beach who killed two teenage girls in a terrible accident. The driver was an “illegal” Mexican. Rivera accusing Bill O’Reilly of making this same “cheap political point,” Rivera said, “[He] could have been a Jewish drunk, an Italian drunk, or an Irish drunk, would you still care?” (p. 5). I believe this is the perfect example to showcase the constant double standard that exists when it comes to use Latinos as ‘scapegoats’ to take the blame for high rates of crimes or other issues. Statistics show that immigrants are no more prone to committing crimes than are the native-born.…

The article tries to use a tactic of right versus wrong by stating that elected officials in sanctuary cities aren’t following federal laws. The article also tries to persuade the reader the sanctuary cities are harboring criminals and that undocumented immigrants are bad. The social problem that this relate to is immigration, specifically immigration from latin America. This event of trying to discredit and defund Sanctuary cities relates to a larger social problem of the United States’ history of viewing immigrants negatively. The general public perception of the United States view immigrants as a threat. Immigrants are viewed as dangerous, criminals, and a threat to the United States economy. Different groups in society view have different ideas about this social problem. Typically, conservative groups want stronger border control and are in favor of mass deportation while, liberal groups tend want less harsh immigration laws and highly favor sanctuary…

In the state of Arizona, Senate Bill 1070 is a bill that in essence, regulate that elements of the criminal justice system, assist in the enforcement of federal immigration laws. This new law would make the failure of carrying ones immigration documents a crime; additionally giving law enforcement officials a more broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally. Some fail to realize that this is not a new concept with immigration or any racist or bias towards Hispanic ethnicities. It is not called a Hispanic deportation law, it is immigration enforcement. Immigration Customs Enforcement or Border Patrol enforce the immigration laws and protect the borders of the United States. This means all persons that are not United States citizens, not any one specific ethnicity. This law provides added jurisdictional boundaries when in contact with a person suspected of being undocumented and requires that law enforcement officials act upon incidents involving undocumented immigrants and related activities.…

Immigration raises three significant, controversial issues in criminal justice. The first is the time and resources necessary to deport immigrants, whether they are documented or undocumented, and who have been convicted of crimes. The second is whether and to what extent local law enforcement resources should be used locating and removing undocumented immigrants. The third issue is the extent to which law enforcement emphasis should be on persons who transport and employ undocumented immigrants, rather than on the immigrants themselves.…

Immigration debates breed opinions and questions from both sides of the scale. One side believes that Central American Immigration has brought many undocumented immigrants to the U.S. who negatively impact public safety and violate the law. Therefore, many people specifically target the Mexican government and accuse them of sending a large amount of criminals to the U.S. who significantly contribute to crime in America. For example, a recent murder committed in San Francisco by an undocumented immigrant called Francisco Sanchez has caught the public’s attention, and has caused many politicians to voice their anger regarding illegal immigration. However, others argue that debates tend to unjustifiably accuse undocumented immigrants of criminal activity within the U.S, even though immigrants have a lower crime rate than natural born Americans. Furthermore, the opposition that denies those claims also states that undocumented immigrants benefit the economy and support job development by generating significant amounts of money each year. If undocumented immigrants were to be deported, the U.S. economy would be negatively affected and suffer great losses. However, many people who dispute those beliefs are convinced that undocumented immigrants hurt the economy by increasing taxpayer costs, limiting the amount of income received by impoverished Americans, and reducing the employment rate among poor…

Sister Helen Chaska was walking around in her hometown of Oregon doing missionary work when Maximiliano Esparza—illegal immigrant for Mexico—raped her and then strangled her with her rosary beads (Crime Victims). In another cases three young boy s, two of age 9 and the other age 10, were brutally killed by two illegal immigrants. One of the young boys was beheaded while the other two almost beheaded; the children also suffered from blunt force trauma and asphyxiation (Crime Victims). Immigrants such as Esparaza and the killers of the 3 young boys have no compassion or care for Americans i.e. 9/11. A majority of the violence that occurs in cities is committed by immigrants but once they are caught they are deported back to their country of origin.…

Quite an uproar evolved after The New York Post 's publication of a photograph, on the front page, showed a man on the subway tracks just moments before his death. The paper 's front page read in bold font, "Pushed on the Subway track, this man is about to die, DOOMED," in accompaniment of the photo. The question being "Is this photograph ethical." I say this photo can be either ethical or unethical, depending on how it is used.…

Immigration is a topic on a lot of people’s minds these days. Many illegal immigrants are being pulled over due to racial profiling. According to Hughes (2012), “Nearly half of the suspected illegal immigrants picked up for deportation under Frederick County’s enforcement program last year were arrested for a traffic violation or driving without a license, according to county records.” Subsequently they are deported leaving their families behind here in America to make a tough decision as to stay or go be with family. These families most of the time are mixed citizenship families as to where one or both parents are illegal to this country. As for the children they too sometimes are of mixed citizenship. Most people say “send them back they broke the law” but why should the children have to pay for their parents mistakes. The government and the justice system need to come up with an immigration reform that is fair to all but still penalize them for breaking the law. If you have a criminal history you should be deported but if the biggest crime you have committed is driving without a license you should not be deported. Not only does the Immigration justice system affect the illegal immigrant it also affect the families and children of the illegal immigrant.…
