Newell Company Mini Case
Newell Co. is considered to be a conglomerate with multiple business focusing on the home and office industry. What’s special about Newell is that they specialize in producing goods that are timeless and are in demand year-round, low cost, and low technology. This combination allows Newell to be successful across its corporate level operations and business.
Some examples of this includes how Newell can sell their multiple products in packages from various businesses under their name, specialize in shipping efficiencies and cost reductions, and the value added from the connections they have with major volume merchandisers. Even with these few examples, Newell proves itself to be a great completive business difficult to replicate and one that is highly reliable, efficient, and timely. The problem with Hobby Horse Company is that they were having a tough year throughout 2011. The company has $45 million loan that is due at the end of September, however the company does not have the means to cover the cost of the loan. Looking at the financial statement the company has fairly high leverage where their equity is not as strong. For shareholders to actually benefit from this, earning a higher return would allow them to invest on their own in financial markets. Shareholders want the companies to invest only in projects for which the return on capital is at least as great as the cost of capital.…

Bed, Bath and Beyond (BBBY) currently has $400 million more in cash than they need for ongoing growth and operations requirements. While the company is financially sound analysts and investors worry about the company’s capital structure decisions. Investors do not want to see that much cash on the books and worry that the current capital structure is not the most effective for the future. They prefer that BBBY change their capital structure by paying out excess cash and issuing debt. This could allow BBBY to improve their return on equity and raise earnings per share. Given the low interest rates available it seems like the perfect time for BBBY to add debt to its capital structure. Until now they company has always had a “cash is king, debt is bad” mentality so the decision to add debt is not one being taken lightly.…
