Next To Of Course God America 1 Summary
In e. e. Cummings’ poem “next to of course god america i” cummings’ describes the heroic actions the military made for america.

This claim is proved numerous times throughout the poem. For example, in line 9-10, cummings’ writes “what could be more beautiful than these heroic happy dead”. When cummings’ mentions this, it shows that there is nothing more beautiful than the people who fought for our country and died. This can be shown as many military members are heroic as they are sacrificting themselves for our country, and they were happy doing this. In line 12, “they did not stop to think they died instead” further shows that the military made many heroic actions. If some punctuation was added, this line can be split into “they did not stop to think. They died instead.” This shows that the military did not stop to

Since cummings’ uses the term “instead”, this shows that the miltary didn’t think they were going to die when the US entered the war. The fact that the they died most likely represents that they were in the military in war, as the plural represents many people died, and civilians do not usually die as a group. In line 7, it can be seen that cummings’ is describing the military when cummings’ writes, “thy sons acclaim your glorious name by gorry”. This represents how the military fought for our country through bloodshed and war. Thy sons show the “sons” of america, or the citizens of america. By saying that they “acclaim your glorious name”, cummings’ refers to the way the citizens of america declared america a country after recieving independence and becoming a country. This can be seen as acclaims means to declare something, and america wasn’t originally called america, until they had recieved their independence. By doing this through “gorry”, cummings’ refers to

It saddens me to hear about the complete lack of value to the war effort put on by this small group of Americans. That key leaders given the authority to effect change sit idle while lives are lost. But then, as I stomach that blow, I focus on their true grit, their courage, their resolve, their valor, the bravery, their fearlessness, their dedication, the sheer tenacity of these Hero’s, and I am reminded of why our country is so great. God bless those that lost their lives in this battle, and the families that they left…

For this week’s post the poem I focused on is “Next to of course God America I” written by E. E. Cummings. E. E. Cumming is becoming my new favorite poet, I like his use of words both stylistically and for meaning, the way he makes them play together. This poem is not very forth coming with the 5w’. It’s only after reading it multiple times and looking up definitions that you start to have a slight sense of what is being illustrated. The poem is written in a way that it can carry multiple interpretations, and scenarios that make sense.…

What is a Hero? Soldiers and police officers have had our praise for decades, but do they all deserve our adulation? In the compelling article, “You don’t protect my freedom: Our childish insistence on calling soldiers heroes deadens real democracy,” David Masciotra sends doubt into the reader’s system, prompting the question: what is a hero? Masciotra persuades readers that not all of their leaders and fighters are heroic due to the flaws in the security, military, and democratic systems of America. Rhetorically, Masciotra expresses his opinion with logic to justify and validate his claim.…

“While they continued to write and talk, we saw the wounded and dying. While they taught that duty to one's country is the greatest thing, we already knew that death-throes are stronger. But for all that we were no mutineers, no deserters, no cowards--they were very free with all these expressions. We loved our country as much as they; we went courageously into every action; but also we distinguished the false from true, we had suddenly learned to see. And we saw that there was nothing of their world left. We were all at once terribly alone; and alone we must see it through”…

“However hard the incidents of war may be, the soldier who is called upon to offer and give his life for his country is the noblest development of mankind”(MacArthur.Duty, Honor, Country). In America honor is often seen as a man or woman going out to serve for their country and risk their life in the process. No matter how hard war may seem a soldier who is given the chance to serve their country and takes that opportunity is a hero. “Around a thousand campfires, I have witnessed that enduring fortitude, that patriotic self-abnegation, and that invincible determination which have carved his statue in the hearts of his people”(MacArthur.Duty, Honor, Country). Throughout all that he’s seen, General MacArthur says that he’s viewed neverending courage, loyalty, and untouchable willpower, that has made its way into the hearts and minds of…

“O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife/Who more than self their country loved/And mercy more than life!” These are the words from a verse in ‘America the Beautiful; they give us a sense of what makes America so magnificent. Men and women have selflessly sacrificed their lives for the betterment of this country. In order to repay them for their service, I believe, as citizens of the US, we should put our best selves forward in every aspect of our lives.…

The lack of personal facts in the eulogy prove the author’s point of government negligence towards its soldiers. Despite the statistics and facts on the soldier, the readers are never presented with personal details about his life. In the poem, the speaker announces, “He was married and added five children to the population, / Which our Eugenist says was the right number for a parent of his generation” (29-31). The soldier, merely described as a statistic, sacrificed himself for his country only to go without personal recognition at his funeral. The author uses a distant and unbothered word choice to send the overall message of the lack of interest between the government and the soldiers who fight for their…
