There some reasons for us to believe that he is a reliable narrator. Nick's background seems to be more upper middle class and ¨normal¨ as they would say. Nick is very self-sufficient and doesn't need help from anyone when it comes to money and being he lives in West Egg, makes it even better. With him being so honest and kind of just out of the loop, this makes him a very trustworthy narrator and character all together.
There are also many reasons to believe he is unreliable, reasons for that would be he is very biased. He does not like Tom because he knows that Tom and Daisy are married for money and not for love. He favors Gatsby over all the other characters because he knew Gatsby and knew he was not good enough for Daisy way back when. Although he is honest and down to earth, he is still full of himself. Every situation always must end up being about Nick, even Gatsby's death.
To conclude, Nick is both reliable, and unreliable. He is honest, with a great heart and a care for Daisy and Gatsby. Although he cares a little too much for himself, we should appreciate the fact that he cares so much for the people around him. I truly believe he would have been just as good if he were a more active character in all of this. Maybe the story would have been more interesting or intense if Gatsby or Daisy would have been the narrator's
