The song “Run Up” by Nicki Minaj is a song that will make you feel like you’re spending the day at the beach or just cruising down the highway with your radio on. Nicki Minaj introduces herself as a “Barbie” because when she was young her mom and dad used to fight a lot and to get away from that she made up her own world, in where she was a Barbie. I think these line “They thought you was a shy girl”, “Until I made you my girl”, “Girl you pushed me like a big button” and “‘til I cuffed you like you did something’” is talking about before she even became his girl she was a bashful young woman and she urged him to some action of course as to cuffing her. The New York Times had a great profile piece on Nicki Minaj titled "The Passion Of Nicki Minaj", written by Vanessa Grigoriadis. Nicki opened up about her tough childhood, attending a top performing arts school, her hard beginnings as a rap artist, and having to be a "boss ass b*tch" to get respect in an industry that promotes a misogynist culture. And lastly her finding her own independence and success outside of a relationship. The profile was a nice read and had great insight into Nicki's career, so in case you've missed it I took the liberty to highlight the best parts for you below!…

The girl apologizes for not being what they want her to be and she tries to change herself into what they would like. The poem says “She was advised to play coy, exhorted to come on hearty, exercise, diet, smile, and wheedle,” this explains that she tries her hardest to change herself and fit in. Eventually she figures out that no matter how hard she tries she still can not become what they want of her. Imagery is shown by the standards of the people and that the Barbie doll is not a real person and no one can live up to her, but they have not realized that.…

The poem “Barbie Doll” is a poem concerning a young girl who has let the societal expectations that America puts on young women destroy her. The poem starts out by explaining a small female child who is just like all young girls. She had dolls and miniature ovens and lipsticks for the dolls, but when she hit puberty and her body began changing a classmate called her fat (Piercy, 687). This seems to be the beginning of all of her internal battles and self-esteem issues. The next stanza describes all the wonderful characteristics that this young woman should have been very proud of. She was a healthy intellectual who was also quite strong and skillful with her hands (Piercy, 687). The second stanza is predominantly sad to me because she possesses many of life’s more important qualities and it is a shame that she was unable to comprehend that. By my standards intelligence is a more prestigious quality to possess over beauty. The image that she owns is not incorrect in an empirical sense, but it is one that America does not accept as being the definition of the perfect woman. The girl’s human…

Society today, has changed people in the way how they act, and dress. The short story Barbie Q explains that a Barbie is the ideal woman. The Barbie is an example of what women believe to be perfect. The quote “So what if we didn’t Get our new bendable legs Barbie in nice clean boxes and had to buy them on Maxwell street all water soaked and sooty”(Cisneros). This quote means that anyone would buy a Barbie for a cheaper price because they didn’t have the money at the time and who would care if the dolls were wet or smoked. For example the barbie with the melted leg putting a dress on the doll would cover the leg. this event talks about women these days where men rate the women from very beautiful to ugly as they show in the story where the…

The Poem “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy is about a girl who struggles with her body image. The speaker in the poem acts as an observer; watching the girl encounter different experiences as it related to her body image. Today’s generation is much similar to the life of the girl in this poem. Girls are forced to keep up with rising standards that are overwhelming and destructive. This poem uses form, imagery, and word choice to express how society chooses not to accept girls who do not represent the “ideal” woman.…

Some Females have the tendency to become overtly naïve once they are involved in relationships where they believe they are in love. Often times however, it is mere infatuation which engenders their promiscuity. Hill describes a scenario where this is evident in the first stanza of “Doo Wop”. She says, “That one you let hit it and never called you again” then goes on to say “plus when you give it up so easy you ain’t even fooling him.” What Hill is implying is that some black women misconstrue the meaning of love by equating it with sex. Later on in the stanza she declares that these women are in denial, “Niggas f***ed up and you still defending them”, (nativity). These issues stem from lack of self with and low self- esteem which may be due to the often absent father figure in the black community.…

Reba McEntire’s song titled “Fancy” arouses interest in many people because poverty is such a popular issue in today’s society. As Reba states in line 1 “I remember it all very well lookin’ back it was the summer I turned eighteen” you can tell she is a young lady, and as you continue through the lyrics you acknowledge that “Fancy”, her mother, and young sibling live in a “rundown shack” and her father had left them. She continues to tell us that her mom buys her a dress and sends her out to the streets due to her being sick and the baby being hungry. Throughout the song her mother states, “Here’s your one chance Fancy don’t let me down” illustrating that there’s nothing her mom can do and that it’s all up to her to make it from here. In Reba McEntire’s song lyrics and video “fancy” deep tone, vivid imagery, and figurative language is used to illustrate a young girl growing up in poverty and make something of herself.…

Society has a very strong mental image of what the ideal young woman looks, acts, and behaves like. Whenever a young woman fails to live up to these outrageous ideas they are belittled and told to change what they look like and how they behave. This is exactly what happens to the girl in Marge Piercy’s poem “Barbie Doll” (236). The pressure that society was putting on the shoulders of this girl became too much one day. She finally decided to give up on being herself and become who the world wanted her to be. The end of the poem seems to be speaking of her suicidal physical death. Actually, in reality, this is the death of her personality, of everything that is against society’s ideals. Therefore this poem is about the effect that society has…

When looking back on our lives, we remember the joyous memories we shared with the ones we love most, along with the not so impressive moments that we wish we could bury away in our backyards. Some of the most humiliating and trying years of our lives took place during the developmental stages. The times you were left lingering in the foggy valley between childhood and adulthood. Puberty. You would be lying if you said this period did not hit you like a truck. The poem “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy embodies the struggles that adolescence girls endeavor throughout this beautiful and natural season of their young lives.…

“Don’t Hurt Yourself” was the type of song that could leave any true Beyoncé fan a bit shocked. Usually she is not so blatantly vulgar and instead keeps a cleaner image, but that all went south with this particular music video. In the “Anger” portion of Lemonade, Beyoncé allows herself to be genuinely angry in such an unapologetic way. For once, a black woman has let herself feel all of her rage from the lens of a black woman herself, instead of through the eyes of an onlooker who does not live the same experience. In the “Intuition” portion of of Lemonade before the song “Hold Up”, the poetic lines describe how, “In the tradition of men in my blood, you come home at 3 a.m. and lie to me. What are you hiding? The past and the future merge to meet us here. What luck. What a f*cking curse.” This prompted the discussion of the way that black love exists and functions for me. Due to the horrors of the past, the way we experience our love has been damaged and altered to such a point that we as black women feel as though we have to accept any type of treatment from the one we truly love. It has become such a deep…

The form of the poem was written in free verse style. It consists of four stanzas and each stanza tells a different part of the girl’s life. The girl goes from life being simple, playing with toys and having friends to growing up, worrying about looks, what others think, and being judged. These pressures on a young girl growing into a woman can be extreme and change their whole life. The poem begins with the description of a normal child no different from any other child, “The girl was born as usual” (1). There is a transition in the first stanza lines five and six, where the girl goes from young and happy playing with Barbie’s to an adolescent girl being judged by society. The second stanza explains how no matter how perfect the girl is society makes her feel flawed. The third stanza shows how the girl is willing to…

As women, we are born into this world with high expectations. There is an image of perfection that our parents could only hope we fulfill; but as parents love us no matter what our physical outcome may be, society, on the other hand, does not so understand. Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy is a painfully honest eye-opening poem dwelling on the severity of an average girl feeling as if she is not beautiful enough. The crucial elements of poetry include imagery, similes, symbolism, a strong persona, tone, and setting. The pressures of society drive people to talk and look the way people think it wants them to; but there is only so much pressure a fragile human being can take, before they break.…
