Thesis: The turn from Metaphysics to Being in Nietzsche
The nature of existence according to Nietzsche is becoming, not Being, our existence is viewed as unstable and in flux. Because of this Nietzsche criticises Religion as it creates a metaphysical distraction. Metaphysics being ‘what is beyond the physical’ He criticises religion because it undermines the meaning of life as it holds favour to choosing ‘being’ which is God over which is fixed ‘becoming’ that represents life which is in flux. Because if we begin searching for value and meaning outside of this world we are diminishing the value of …show more content…
this one. That is why the death of god is something required. In order to achieve becoming over being needs a lot of strength that not many have, Nietzsche then created the ‘Übermensch’ which is a being of ‘becoming’ and has ‘will to power’ which is the main driving force in humans and also includes the idea of survival of the fittest such as the Übermensch.
Antithesis: The turn from Metaphysics to Being in Heidegger
Due to Nietzsche’s focus on ‘Becoming’ over ‘Being’, Heidegger tries to recapture the traditional view of ‘Being’.
Heidegger’s main focus was to move away from the ontic and rather to the ontological thought on the meaning of ‘Being’. He characterizes our lives as ‘homelessness’ due to the failure of our recognition of our own Being. He believes our problem with not being able to acknowledge the meaning of being is because we are stuck in ‘Metaphysical thinking’ that asks ‘what is being’ rather than what the meaning of being is as reducing being into smaller concepts has concealed the truth of being to us and the connection between man and Being. Heidegger then uses his concept of ‘Dasein’ (being there refers to the presence of the entity in the world. •Heidegger uses the word to refer the kind of entity which the human being fundamentally is, viz. that being (entity) which takes its being (existence) as its foremost concern. ) to investigate the meaning of being and is expected to change ‘the essence of man’. We must relearn how to think from out of ‘Being’
again.
In conclusion this contrast of ideas is interesting as it looks at how Heidegger tries to transcend Nietzsche as he thinks he can help man re-establish his relation to Being and overcome his ‘homelessness’ and what Nietzsche does is a phenomenology of human reality as he looks at the different ways human beings evaluates reality. Nietzsche’s preference over becoming is particularly interesting as he has a bigger idea for the value of human life than remaining constant but Heidegger’s idea of rephrasing the question of being and then re-asking the questioner creates a wide branch for thought and discussion.
