There is not much of a difference between Erik Weihenmayer and a sighted mountaineer. It takes bravery, mental toughness, and a survival instinct to climb dangerous mountains. The only difference between Erik and a sighted climber is that Erik listens to a bell attached to a fellow climber. He also uses custom made poles and his partners shout out terrain descriptions. He wants people to realize that even though he is blind, there are not that many differences when undertaking challenges like climbing Mount Everest. Erik believed that he could successfully climb Mount Everest and he did.
Erik Weihenmayer has multiple qualities that make him a successful mountaineer. Along with his obvious physical stamina, Erik has a mental toughness that not all people have, sighted or not. He has always been driven, not because he was blind, but because that is his personality. Many people admire him for climbing Everest with his disability, but he does not want people to think of him in that way. Erik accepts his disability and has learned to work with it. He does not mind that people are inspired by him but he does not want people thinking if some blind guy can do it, anyone can.
Ninety percent of climbers that attempt to summit Mount Everest do not succeed, several die each year. Erik Weihenmayer is in the ten percent who have reached the summit yet he was the only one in the world that did so without sight. In 2011 he competed in a reality show called Expedition Impossible and his group of three placed second overall. That showed many viewers that blind people are capable of doing what some sighted and many people cannot do. I believe he is a unique individual not only because he is blind and has overcome many physical challenges, but because there are not many people that have that kind of drive, toughness and the ability to inspire others while maintaining a sense of humility.
