Elie always cared for his father and he always made sure that nothing bad was going to happen to him. Elie’s father started to become sick when they were on the train to their last camp. There were almost 100 people in one cattle cart when there are only supposed to be 80. The cattle cart would stop now and then to take out all the people who have died during the trip. When they finally got to another stop to empty out the dead. Suddenly volunteers came to take Elie’s father, but then Elie quick jumped on his father and said no he’s not dead! Elie went to go and take a shower and then later came back and saw that his father had gone to sleep. Elie quick ran over there and said One night the sirens went off in the camp and Elie was following the mob into the block, and abandoned his father. Then the next morning Elie woke up and remembered that he had abandoned his father so Elie went looking for his father. Elie searched and searched, but then he came to a block that was giving out coffee. Suddenly a weak voice shouted out Elie’s name and had asked him to go and get him coffee and that’s when Elie knew that it was his father asking for the coffee. Elie ran to his father and asked him a bunch of questions like is he okay, how did you sleep, and where were you? Elie fought his way to the front of the coffee line just for his Dad and he finally got the coffee for his Dad. After he gave his father the cup of coffee he was ordered to go outside and clean the blocks, but only the sick could stay inside. Finally Elie was done working outside and then he ran back inside and ran towards his father. Again he asked his father questions, such as how are you, did you eat? His father said that he was not given anything to eat, he also said that they said

Elie’s father has become sick once they reach the Buchenwald camp. He gets weaker everyday that he is alive. Elie, along with the rest of his block are instructed to take showers while their blocks have not been finished being cleaned. While waiting outside, Elie sees his father and explains that, “From a far, I saw my father and ran to meet. He went by me like a shadow, passing me without stopping, without a glance. [...] He looked at me for a moment and his gaze was distant, [...] the face of a stranger” (Wiesel 107-108). While Elie’s father is practically lying on his deathbed, Elie’s believes that he sees his father running to him. Yet, it is not his father, but a complete stranger. Elie is then realizing how faceless all of the prisoners have become. By Elie not recognizing that the stranger was not his father, proves that Elie is growing away from his father. Elie tells Oprah, “When my father, who was sick, called out to me - and I didn’t respond, because I was afraid to be beaten up. I let him die” (“Oprah” 3). Elie assumes his father died because of him. Elie became scared at what could happen to him, more than what happened to his…

Elie feels guilty when thinking, “If only I were relieved of this responsibility, I could use all my strength to fight for my own survival, to take care only of myself,” (pg. 106, Wiesel). From the prolonged time spent at the camp, the concept of ‘every man for himself’ has imbedded itself into Elie’s head. He wants to abandon his father for a better chance of survival. The camp’s ideals have gotten into his head, and even though his father is feeble from illness and malnutrition he remains emotionally insensitive towards his father. It’s obvious, because of the ideals lingering in his mind Elie has become the type of person he hates, the one who would abandon their kin when push comes to…
