Introduction
In this week’s assignment, we were asked to read Judith Lorber’s Night to His Day: The Social Construction of Gender, and to discuss the following areas. First I will summarize in ordinary language the concept of "gender as structure”. Then we will look how Judith Lorber demonstrated the significant differences that gender categories have for the individual and for society.
Gender as a Structure Before I explain the concept of “gender as structure” let us look at a few important terms. Judith Lobber found that no matter how many differences and combinations of elements that could influence people around the globe there is still one constant and that is the social institution of gender (Lober, 1994). No matter how cultural differ they all have set ways and traditions for the way that genders (masculine and feminine) should be raised and act in their societies (Lober, 1994). Also Lober finds with the sameness that the different societies have with gender it is a way to have difference in society, meaning that societies are divided into two separate recognized gender status “man” and “woman” (Lober, 1994).
