Nikki's Trip To His Grandmother-Personal Narrative
One summer day Nikki was going to be shipped off to his grandmother’s cottage for the summer. He wasn't too excited about going with his grandmother. Niki was certain that this summer was going to be so boring. But he obviously underestimated his grandmother in ways more that one. Forensic, he claimed that there wasn't any televisions to watch or devices to play on. Another example of this is when Nikki claimed there wasn't anyone to play with, referencing how bored he thought he was going to be. This evidence shows that Niki was wrong about his grandmother. Nikki thought they if there wasn't any electric devices, there wouldn't be nothing to do. Nikki could have gone outside to play, or read a book there were many other things he …show more content…
At first, Niki does not want to go and doesn't feel welcome. ““There’s nobody to play with, I complained.”” Nikki was disgusted at the fishless river because he couldn't catch any fish. But, when he found the raft his knowledge of fun just expanded. After that, him and his grandmother went to the river to row the raft more often. “The birds kept us company the whole time, soaring, swooping, and singing.” He learned that you don't need company to have fun, you can just enjoy nature. “Some mornings, Grandma would make a bagful of sandwiches and a thermos of icy lemonade. Then we’d put on our bathing suits, grab some towels, a lawn chair, and an inner tube, and pole upriver to her favorite swimming spot.” This quote from the story shows how Nikki and his grandmother became closer. In conclusion, I believe that Niki was disrespectful to think that his grandmother would not be able to entertain him. One example of this when he mentioned that she didn't posses electronics. He also learned that he doesn't need other kids to play with, but instead he could embrace the things of nature. To sum it all up, I think Nikki learned no matter the age or where you are you can still have

At the beginning, the narrator is a character of much innocence and naïveté, but as the story develops, he becomes more mature and sophisticated. His first step towards the transformation comes through his asking out of the older Sheila Mant. In doing so, he is opening himself to the troubles that come along with involving himself in love. Opening himself to the pain he knows this may cause is a sign that he will no longer have the ignorance that allows him to avoid pain. As the story progresses, these love problems begin to identify themselves. During the ride on the canoe, Sheila states that, “[fishing] is boring and…

One of the major elements of this story is the river. The narrator is in the river every day in order to catch Shelia’s eye. He studies her constantly so that he knows her emotions just by the way she is positioned. The only time she is approachable is when she is hugging her knees sitting on the raft. The boy swims up and down the river, but he is not the only one that is trying to impress Shelia. Older boys that are part of the crew team also try to get her attention but she remains aloof. One of the many activities available is tubing. To tube, you get on a round raft type of object and you sit in the middle of it and ride down the river. You can see all the beautiful things around you, such as the trees, the little islands and the wildlife on the sides of the river. The trees are a brilliant green all summer and in spring they bloom with lovely white and pink colors. In autumn, they turn a bright red, yellow, and orange, lighting up the river. Some islands look eerie in winter because it is hard to see through all the branches and trees, giving the island a dark, spooky look. Other islands look warm and inviting, beckoning you in with their luscious branches full of different colored leaves. The wildlife looks beautiful, sometimes family of deer are visible; you can usually see one or two yearlings with their mother. Other times you can see chunky little groundhogs, usually during spring time. To see the groundhogs, you have to pay attention minutely because they are usually undistinguished among all the trees and the ground. Kayaking and canoeing are other options, which are both just as entertaining as tubing except they are more serene. You can put your hands in the river and sometimes feel the scaly fish rub up against your hand.…

During the novel , Maclean uses various similes to compare the river with life and family. For example, he shared with the audience that the “common love for the river would bring them back as a family.” The river has always played a big role in the family because their father would always take them fly fishing ever since they were children. Maclean as a child always believed that, " there was no clear line between fly fishing and religion." This explains why the river was so sacred to Maclean, his brother Paul, and his father.…

Every year, my family on my dad’s side goes rafting down the Truckee river. It has always been a tradition to go to tahoe over the summer, and go rafting one of those days. Over the years, we have had many fond memories, like water fights with water guns, and pushing people into the water. First, we go down to the place to rent the raft, they set up our family with two, and then we go down the river until there is a bend where they take you and your raft out. At the end of the place where you can raft, there is a little grill that we would go to for lunch.…

A few days after I went home with Phoebe, I ended up getting sick and my parents sent me to a hospital. I was trapped in that hospital for about a month with nothing to really do. You know what was funny though? The days practically flew by, right out of the window. Before I knew it, half a month had passed. I was slowly getting back my strength and everything else as well. I made sure I asked the nurse, who was taking care of me, to bring me malted milk. She was very kind to me, and chatty in a nice, friendly sort of way. It was a nice break from the typical phony people. Speaking of phonies, you should've seen my therapist. He came to me during this one session, started asking me questions in a very posh voice. You know, like he's really…
