Introduction
Non-invasive Positive Pressure Support, commonly known as NIPPV, is a process of delivery of mechanical ventilation to those patients who need support to breathe (at certain times). NIPPV doesn’t need an artificial airway to be created through the larynx or trachea. NIPPV is, in the modern times, one of the most important advances medicine has made in the past two decades in managing acute and chronic respiratory failure. Earlier, non-invasive ventilation was only administered through certain devices that created negative pressures, for example, the cuirass or the iron lung, both of which are now obsolete.
Types of NIPPV
To fully understand NIPPV, one must understand its different types or ‘modes’. NIPPV has both, a pressure controlled mode, as well as a volume-controlled mode to deliver ventilation, both of which generate positive pressure. NIPPV’s basic concept, thus, is that it can apply positive pressure during the respiratory cycle, which includes inspiration and expiration. With advancing technology, the devices and the techniques controlling the delivery of pressure (how breaths are mechanically started, controlled, and ended) have advanced as well. Thus, there are various modes of NIPPV available, which include:
