The depression did not only affect life in the city, it also had a large impact on rural life in the West. Families in the West still suffered from the same hardships that families in the East did. The economy was no better on either side of the country. Some people may believe that finding a job in the country was not hit as difficult as it was in the East “because farming was a self -sufficient occupation”, but this is far from the truth (Lowe). It could be said that it was even harder to find jobs in this part of the country because most work pertained to agriculture - which was a very unruly and unpredictable profession. Since the depression, it has been numerous times recreated, but to display the relative struggle of various races, ethnicities, and genders. As Robert Hariman and John Louis Lucaites mentioned in No Caption Needed, the family in the photo had once been altered into an African American family with primarily African features. The story behind the photo remained the same, though. The new picture outlined the relationship between the African American race and poverty. Their goal was similar in both photos - both pictures wanted to illustrate their suffering to raise awareness and receive support. The writers of No Caption Needed summarized the alteration of the picture as “thus [conjuring] the structure of feeling that underscored the original photograph’s characterization of unwarranted victimage, albeit with regard to a different audience (“No Caption Needed”).
