No Crooked Leg, No Bleared Eye By Elizabeth I
I am my greatest piece of art and, similarly to poetry, I am relentlessly expressing myself. I remember the first time I created a piece of poetry that I actually enjoyed and felt proud of, as an artist. I never felt so in tune and so whole, perhaps when I am painting, when I delivered my poem out loud. It was senior year and I had the greatest literature professor who introduced me to the many poems mentioned in my essay that describe who I am. Poetry reflects who I am because it is a genre of strength, difficulty, a great variety of styles and themes and an even greater artistic expression.
Poetry is strong and courageous, expressing without fear or doubt. Often times speaking about atrocities and extremely difficult situations to only rise

I am an artist: I create art and I am currently majoring in Studio Art; but I am also an athlete: I do cayuco, CrossFit and Flag Football; or I care about the environment and the animals, by being vegan; but I also enjoy fashion and makeup, as means of personal expression. Poetry has many different styles and genres within. It is so assorted and full of endless possibilities from short poems such as “No Crooked Leg, No Bleared Eye” by Queen Elizabeth I, which is only four lines long to an eleven verse poem such as “Walshingham” by Sir Walter Raleigh or even a three verse piece about death such as “Written The Night Before His Execution” by Chidiock Tichbourne. There are infinite ways to create a poem with almost any topic or style. The diversity found in this genre is the most prominent characteristic that reflects who I am. I am not one thing, I am everything or nothing or everything in …show more content…
Poetry is a genre that its sole purpose is to express anything and absolutely everything. By means of figures of speech, poetry meets its goal. A great example of an expressive poem is “The Flowers That on The Banks and Walks Did Grow” by Aemilia Lanyer where she uses a vocabulary flooded with personification to describe a beautiful garden and express the loss of someone. I personally really feel the line ‘The sun grew weak, his beams no comfort gave, while all the green things did make the earth their grave” resonates with me as an artist because it is so beautifully written in a way that decay is almost perfect. I really enjoy doing art that has an ethereal and aesthetically pleasing feel even when expressing strong emotions or themes. I use my hair, which I dye many different colors ranging from pink or blue to rainbow hued. Another way I like to express myself is through my makeup and my clothing which I really enjoy to put together and personally feel like I can reinvent myself every day and change depending on how I feel. But my most expressive medium is definitely my art but sadly is the rarest of them all. In the end poetry and I are alike in wanting to express so much with whatever medium we have to do so, in poetry it is words and in my life is how I look and what I

One of my favorite poems is “poetry.” Poetry is a poem about poets using poetry to express themselves and not to impress anybody. She uses metaphors to show what poetry is, she says “A poem is pure energy.” These types of metaphors help the reader picture what the poems trying to say. She also uses personification to also have a better understanding.…

I feel that poetry has often been a vehicle for political statements, and could be an important way for society to examine and express social injustices. It shows that poetry can not only be art one can appreciate and relate with, but it can also inform, make people curious about a time in history that you might not have known before reading the poem.…

Everyone goes through tough times, like breakups for example and reading poems about getting over tough times can aid in the healing of a broken heart. Imagine how many people wouldn’t have been able to get over their tough times if they didn’t have poetry. In the essay Blasphemy written by Martin Espada, he writes about a man named Sam Hamill who found serenity in poetry. Espada reports that “the poet (Hamill) concludes that he is ‘the luckiest son-of-a-bitch alive.’” Espada claims that “It was his (Hamill’s) ‘dumb luck’ to discovery poetry.” Sam Hamill was a troubled child who was in and out of jail at the age of 14, yet that all turned around when he discovered poetry and became a poet. Poetry can also inspire people who aren’t even searching for inspiration. Sandra Beasley states in her essay Earning Our Laurel Leaves that: “poems can inspire and spur action: something as simple as the right metaphor can shift the reader’s understanding.” Both authors infer that poetry is very valuable and that it can help people in many ways. Poetry has the power to both aid and inspire people by simply just…

Poetry is a precise art. The challenge for poets is to choose the one specific, high quality word that not only conveys the most meaning, but also flows with the poems rhythm and form. One word chosen with too many or too few syllables, or with the wrong connotation, has the potential to reduce the entire poem to rubble.…

In my mind, I am not a creative person, I am like a robot when it comes to music. I do not like to put my own spin and create something new. I love to stick to what is written and play it exactly as though it was coming out of a computer. Having the freedom to compose anything that I wanted and relate it back to the piece was a challenge, but I managed to pull through at the end. Another challenge was creating a melody that expressed the poem correctly.…

Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Two famous poets come to mind to anybody who has ever been in an English class, Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings. Both of these poets have had numerous famous pieces due to the fact that they both captivate the readers attention and can even keep them intrigued in a piece long after their first time reading it. A line such as one of the most memorable lines from Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (1). Many recognize this line and many may have their own opinions on how to look at his poem ‘The Road Not Taken’. Another poem with a shared theme is E.E. Cummings poem “Anyone lived in a pretty how town” these two poems are very different in delivery and literary devises, but both have a common theme, a theme of how time goes on and the choices one makes, shapes who they become. This reoccurring theme is important because live doesn’t stop going it is a clock that will never stop ticking and every time the clock ticks we make a choice that shapes who we are and who we will be in the future.…

As I attempted to perfect my drawing and painting skills in high school, I slowly realized through more serious art classes that I was taking that the conceptual ideas behind your work can say much more than just a simple, beautifully painted picture. More than anything, art is about sending a message. Thinking about the ideas behind your work is the most crucial part in discovering who you are as an artist. For me, I want to make art inspired by what I’ve been through, things that I have experienced first-hand and felt so strongly in my lifetime: things like fear, love, heartbreak, feeling alive, feeling lost, feeling connected to the world. I want to visually depict emotion in my art, and use it to help other people know that they’re not alone in the ways they feel and things they go through. When I think about what I want to do for the rest of my life, the mark I want to make on the world, all I know is that I want to talk about all of these elements of life. I want to make people think about them. I want to pull them apart, and try to make some sense of them. This realization was liberating- and I discovered a much more intense passion for art as a…
