If this song has lasted 53 years, what’s to say it won’t last 153 years or more. Our second song was Zombies by The Cranberries, another great pick by Miss Armitage. This rebel, protest song by Irish rock band The Cranberries was released in September of 1994. The song was written by Dolores O’Riordan in memory of Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, two boys killed in an IRA bombing in Warrington. Reaching #1 on the charts (1994) in Belgium, Denmark, Australia, and Germany; as well as, winning the “Best Song” award in 1995’s MTV Europe Music Awards, was an amazing accomplishment which has proven its worth to the listeners of future generations. Our third song is Follow You by Bring Me The Horizon, the last of Ashley’s creative selection, was released September 11, 2015. It is acclaimed to be BMTH’s most romantic song, because it is basically a love letter to the wives of the band members. This song features a heartbeat sound surrounded by handclaps, layered vocals, and synths. This song, although fairly new, could possibly last through the ages. Only time will tell if this song will stick in the hearts of music enthusiasts for generations to come. Our fourth song is No Scrubs by TLC, was the first pick of my own personal list.
This song is performed by strong female artists who, as stated in the song, “don’t want no scrub.” These ladies are not just singing a song, they are portraying their independence and stating that they will not settle for just any guy who gives them attention. This song has reached the top of the charts in the late 90s and has continued to remain relevant. It is still used in commercials and movies, maintaining its popularity. This song will always be like an anthem for independent women who won’t settle for anything less than they deserve. The next song is Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman. This is one of my favorite songs, because the sound of it speaks to my soul. It reached #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1996 making it Chapman’s biggest US hit to date. Although it is a break up song, it is more of a plea for a reason to not give up on the relationship. The conclusion of the song though is the partner stating that love was already proclaimed and there is nothing left to say. I chose Give Me One Reason because I know that it will speak to other souls in future generations, the way it has spoken to
mine. In The Air by Phil Collins was my third pick and the sixth song for our group list. I have heard this song used so many times I have lost track. This was the walk out song for my high school football team, they would play the song and as soon as the drum hit they put on their helmet and run onto the field. I have heard this song used in commercials and advertisements, as well as, in movies and even musical cards. This song will always find a way to be significant. Let’s be Still by The Head & The Heart, Cold is the Night by The Oh Hellos, Screen by Twenty-One Pilots, and Lollipop by the Chordettes were the next four songs on our list three of which were chosen by Dylan Bates and the fourth was mutually agreed upon. They are all unique and have made their way into the hearts of music listeners. Even if they are not widely known, they are significant to those who have discovered them. Lollipop by the Chordettes has been a major hit and very influential on music. Remixes of this song have become very popular and significant in the music industry. Music isn’t just sounds; it is emotions, actions, ideas, culture, and soul. Having a diverse selection of music shows the diversity of an individual. When we listen to music, we are opening our souls to be touched by an artist. Our Time Capsule is filled with diversity and personality, because we are diverse and have unique personalities. The songs were chosen because if a song can speak to one soul, what is to stop it from reaching another in the future?
