No Spectator Shame Case Study
Hello Ava,

I agree with your post about when there are no spectator shame can’t bloom. In some case the client may feel that because of experiencing psychological and behavioral problem or symptoms of mental illness and that are a source of stigma. And sometimes the client may also feel shame of unsuccessful attempts (often over a period of years) to resolve such problems. And telling their story to the counselor or therapist face to face could be shameful, and that is why the couch effect could minimize that problem.

Nice seeing you in this course, Ava and looking forward to reading your informative post.

Studies reported to Evan Grossman of Men's Journal have shown that the generation of people reaching adulthood now are considered a bunch of “self-obsessed, irresponsible, and unmotivated generation of false achievers.” What could have caused this? A huge cause of this is what is known as the “self-esteem movement” according to Evan Grossman of Men’s Journal. Kids are given rewards and trophies for participation and maybe even just showing up to simply build their confidence. Participation awards may build confidence but it is also a huge issue in our society. These rewards are giving kids the feeling of success even if they haven’t done anything to achieve success. This is teaching kids to be complacent…

This approach does not dwell on what may be wrong with the client but simply focuses on a solution for the client to remove themselves from a rut, per say. People are not defined by a specific problem nor labeled or identified by a disorder (Corey, 2013). For example words such as "depression" do not refer to a thing-like illness in a thing-like part of a thing-like mind. The word "depression" refers to all the social processes that have occurred for that person in their interactions with others through the years. What is called "depression" is an intersubjective and historical process, including interpretation and active conscious choice, as well as more habitual and automatic, unconscious and out-of-awareness choices and assumptions. These, together with the influence and actions of others, lead clients to call themselves…

Not only that, it makes those suffering from mental illnesses feel shameful for having a mental illness and leads to an increase in depression and isolation. For the longest time, I did not want to tell anyone that I was struggling with depression and during this time thoughts of suicide became more often. I felt as though no one would understand me and that I was wrong for dealing with depression. I isolated myself from everyone. Once I began talking about my struggle with depression with my friends, I found that a lot of them also struggled with depression, and talking about what I was going through really helped me through that dark period. This is why we must speak highly of getting therapy when needed! There are so many people who struggle with mental illnesses who don’t ever talk about their illness and in return they feel isolated. We need to push for an environment that encourages those with mental illnesses to talk about what they are dealing…

On an individual level, the counselor may have an easier time managing each of these micro-skills. Self-disclosure can be extremely helpful in developing a therapeutic bond; however, the counselor needs carefully consider that the disclosure is beneficial to the client’s concern, rather than to the counselor (Nyman & Daugherty, 2001). They should always be honest and genuine (Knapp, 2007). A counselor should not make up a story because he wants to have a better rapport with the client. Disclosures should be used sparingly, and not be lengthy in order to ensure that the focus remains on the client’s…
