In The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, there are two gang. They are defined by there social classes.The greasers are financially unstable and considered academically challenged. The Socs are financially stable and considered academically gifted. Even though ponyboy is financially unstable, that does not mean he will not secede in life; his educational aspect will determine his altitude. Ponyboy understands things better then the other people in his gang. Pony enjoys movies and books because he knows how to apply a deep connection between him and the material so he can understand it better. So they usually understand that's he's not old enough to be in high school but he's academic gifted so he can be. People eventually realize that pony is and state that to him he doesn't let him get in his head and make him arrogant. Cherry understands this and that's why she likes and trusts pony as a friend. "What's a nice, smart kid like you running around [for]...."(cherry valence)(21). She trusts pony and understands what he says and why he acts the way he does. Even after all pony went through his teachers still put him to his high expectations to complete his work at the speed and accuracy he did before. His English teacher knew the circumstances and that's why he understood why ponyboy was falling behind in class."taking into consideration the circumstances..."(ponyboys English teacher)(144). That why he gives ponyboy another chance to get his grade up because he knows that ponyboy can challenge himself even if he thinks he's at his limit “if you come up with a good semester theme I'll pass you with a C grade”(144).
