The compound formaldehyde itself isn't found in nail polishes. In actuality, a resin form of formaldehyde is in nail polish. When formaldehyde becomes a resin, the formaldehyde is no longer present. The resin is called the tosylamide/formaldehyde resin. It is what makes the polish tough and resilient. On the other hand, formaldehyde (chemical formular: CH2O) is in nail hardeners, which is still considered to be nail polish. Besides nail hardeners, formaldehyde can be found in many household products such as latex paint and super glue. Regardless of what product it is, when it is used, a large amount of formaldehyde is released into the air and inhaled. Formaldehyde can also enter the body and be exposed on the skin…

MMT is an octane-improving fuel additive. The chemical compound was developed in the 1950s by what became the Ethyl Corporation (today part of the Afton Chemical Corporation, but hereinafter referred to as “Ethyl”).[ii] MMT was widely used in the United States and Canada, during the 1960s and 1970s in leaded gasoline. However, due to public health concerns, MMT was banned in the late 1970s by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).[iii] The health effects of exposure to manganese through its use in MMT are under research. Manganese, the main component of MMT, is a common element of our diets in low levels. However, at high levels, manganese has been shown to be a neurotoxin that can cause irreversible neurological damage.[iv] For example, manganese is among the leading toxins that are linked to developmental disabilities.[v] Ethyl claims “MMT has demonstrated no identifiable risk to public health;”[vi] however, the EPA says, “Although it is not possible based on present information to conclude whether adverse health effects will be associated with [MMT] exposures…, neither is…

A condenser, 100mL round bottom flask, and a drying tube were clamped near the sink so that water could be run through the condenser. 31mL of xylene, 5 boiling chips, 0.56g of maleic anhydride, and 1.02g of anthracene were mixed in the round bottom flask. A heating mantle was then used to heat the mixture and allowed to reflux for one hour. After refluxing for one hour, the product was left to cool to room temperature and then placed in an ice bath to precipitate the product. The product was vacuum filtered and an off white powdery substance was obtained. The product was then washed with two 10mL portions of pentane and left to dry for 10 minutes over the vacuum funnel. Product was left in the drawer to dry over the weekend and weighed 1.08g after drying. TLC and H-NMR was not conducted due to time…

5.10g of 4- Aminophenol was suspended in water, in a quick fit (QF) round bottomed flask in the fume cupboard as 4 – aminophenol is toxic. Ethanoic anhydride (toxic vapor) was added and mixed by swirling and a reflux condenser was attached and fixed onto a clamp stand and heated for ten minutes on a steam bath with occasional swirling. The mixture was cooled at room temperature and further cooled with cold tap water. The crude solid that formed at the bottom of the condenser was vacuum filtered and transferred into a conical 100cm3 flask. A hot plate was used as a heat source to recrystallise the solid from 24cm3 of water. The crystallised product was dried in the oven, spread on a watch glass and weighed and the results recorded.…

Melamine is an organic compound that is often combined with formaldehyde to producemelamine resin, a synthetic polymer that is fire resistant and heat tolerant. The resin is a versatile material that has a highly stable structure. Its uses include whiteboards, floor tiles, kitchenware, fire retardant fabrics and commercial filters. Melamine can be easily molded while warm but will set into a fixed form, which makes it suitable for certain industrial applications. This compound is considered safe for its normal uses, but food products that are contaminated with it can be unsafe for…

Several different fields depend on qualitative analysis to aid in their ability to identify organic chemicals. For example, atomic absorption spectrometry is used by toxicologists to check for cadmium and lead and other chemicals in potable water (2). Also, gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry is used by biologists and agricultural scientists to check soil for volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) (3). In addition to these, qualitative analysis is useful for determining medical diagnoses, developing industrial materials, and for pharmaceutical and forensic research (4). This experiment focuses on determining if an unknown chemical is an aldehyde or a ketone. This determination is made based on the results of a Tollens Test, a Schiff test, an iodoform test and a derivative melting point analysis.…
