There are many factors that have had an impact on economic changes one of the factors I will be discussing in this paper is natural environmental causes. Hurricane Sandy was one of the biggest storms to hit the Northeastern United States. The storm affected many homes and businesses forcing many businesses to close. The destruction was unpredictable but North Shore LIJ employee’s response was great. Whit Just about 16 hospitals and more than 300 outpatient facilities, the enormity of the challenge facing North Shore LIJ both during and after the storm. As Part of its disaster preparedness planning for any emergency, North Shore LIJ Health System and all of its hospitals and long
term care facilities were able to activate their emergency operations centers. The North Shore LIJ Health System has been a great aid to the community in providing assistance with the hurricane relief. Following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy CEO Michael Dowling introduced a dedicated Emergency Employee Resource Center to assist employee suffering hardship caused by the storm. North Shore LIJ Health System played a big role with its contributions to the community and society. The Health System assisted the community by organizing fundraisers for both the community as well for employees. They provided food, shelter, and financial assistance to those in need. The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy was devastating to all members of the communities. The North Shore LIJ Health System has raised about $2.7 million for Hurricane Sandy relief fund primarily dedicated to employees and their families. Similar arrangements continue to help hundreds of North Shore LIJ and Hurricane Sandy Relief Page 3 additional staff members and their love ones.
Many employees and trusting have donated roughly about hundreds of thousands of dollars toward the funds that were raised for relief efforts and Lenox Hill Hospital’s recent Autumn Ball generated more than $2 million. North Shore LIJ CEO Michael Dowling decided to redirect the donations toward the North Shore LIJ Hurricane Sandy Relief Funds as well as charities that were helping other victims in the community. The most significant changes that have impacted the Health System have been both technological and social environment. The North Shore LIJ health System has learned the most important lessons during its response to Hurricane Irene in August of 2011 was the need for a better system to track the whereabouts of evacuated patients and to better ensure their medical records. During Hurricane Sandy the health system began using incident management software called “E Team” which enabled each hospital or facility to enter patient’s names that were being evacuated into the web based program. This web based program made things much easier for hospitals to keep track of their patients that were
evacuated.
With the help of North Shore LIJ the communities were able to get aid by medical vans and received treatment. The North Shore LIJ medical mobile van provides free medical evaluations by North Shore--LIJ doctors and nurses, primary and urgent care services, blood pressure checks, diabetes evaluation, prescription refills, flu shots and tetanus shots. Over 900 people in the community have been treated during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. North Shore LIJ has had a great impact in the North Shore LIJ and Hurricane Sandy Relief Page 4 communities and today’s society and one of the reasons why North Shore LIJ is considered the #1 hospital in the Northern Eastern Region. The Health System future is too expanded within the states and to keep providing the services for all patients.
