For every year in the month of July, the National Nutrition Council (NCC) leads the whole nation in celebration of the Nutrition Month, purposely to disseminate nutrition message to all Filipinos through a focal theme. For 2013, the theme is “Gutom at Malnutrisyon, Sama-sama Nating Wakasan (Hunger and malnutrition, let us end it together!)”. This is to raise awareness on the need for more action in addressing hunger as part of the Philippine’s commitment to the United Nations Millennium Development Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. The DepEd and National Nutrition Council enjoins all schools to participate in this celebration by undertaking meaningful activities which will highlight the importance of good health and nutrition to support this developmental endeavor of the nutrition community. Here are just a few activities schools nationwide implement in their Nutrition Month Culminating program: • Jingle presentations • Cooking contests • Slogan making • Poster making • Essay writing contests • Film showing However, the Nutrition month celebration is not limited to food and proper eating habits. Another effective way we can use to protect ourselves and others from illness are good personal hygiene and proper exercise. Personal hygiene is a vitality in one’s life. It doesn’t take much to attain good hygiene, although some people can’t seem to manage it. Bathing, brushing teeth, using deodorant and, generally, taking care of your body on a regular basis and never in a hit-and-miss fashion will assure that you’re clean and healthy not riddled with bacteria and germs and do not smell. They may all look monotonous but they make us feel good about ourselves and boost our immunity. Exercise is also fundamental in maintaining a healthy body and an active lifestyle.
