Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment centers on Raskolnikov, a man who chooses to murder a common pawnbroker while he struggles with guilt, alienation, and pride. The choice to commit murder creates a division between Raskolnikov and society because he violates the moral laws governing society. In Crime and Punishment, the rift between Raskolnikov and society is both alienating and enriching for his character and demonstrates Dostoevsky’s opinion of an individual’s place in society.…

The glistening, white snow fell slowly to the ground outside the window. The distinct shapes of the snowflakes shown; the light from the street lamp seeping through the cracks. The mumble of the heater in the corner of the room; the faint sound of the blood dripping onto the floor were the only sounds. He lay there; motionless. The thuds were entering the silent room once again. The creaking of the wooden floor grew louder and louder. Still the light of the street lamp shone through the window and onto the far wall. The nasty figure walked into the murky room. Only its shadow appeared on the far wall behind it. The boy in the bed was Eli. His tiny eight year old body was red with his own blood. Then……

Firstly, vanity takes over his life, and unreasonable beliefs, as well as, envy overcome his life, which makes him believe that his position in life is not smart enough. This makes him sad, and he never enjoys life even when he succeeds. Secondly, Ivan and his wife use much time and energy to impress their fake friends by buying expensive crap, rather than working on their dysfunctional marriage that make them live a life of mutual hatred, “Ivan lives a formal life towards his marriage” (Tosley 12). Thirdly, Ivan has no interest in loving anyone apart from himself, although sometimes he wishes to be loved by his colleagues. Moreover, Ivan’s world is full of insecurity since he does not understand his motivations and this makes compulsions of his unconscious impulses to control him, “depressed and dissatisfied with his lifestyle he looks for the best job, with an aim of punishing those who do not appreciate his work” (Tosley 235). Ivan denies death because the assumed consensus strengthens this denial, “Ivan is aware that he is dying, but he is not able to grasp implications of his death” (Tosley 235). He tries hard “to create screens in order to block death’s thoughts from his mind, but the thoughts haunt his mind ceaselessly” (Tosley…

In Leo Tolstoy’s novella The Death of Ivan Ilych, Tolstoy criticizes several aspects of Russian middle class society. The artifice of middle class life - characterized by pettiness, selfishness, and materialism – was one of the main focal points of his criticism, as well as the lack of spirituality and meaning in that life. Of all the characters in The Death of Ivan Ilych, Gerasim is the most important, for he acts as a foil to the artificiality of their lifestyle, and symbolizes the importance of spiritualty in their superficial world. As a peasant, Gerasim represents what Tolstoy saw as the right (or authentic) life: free of falseness and mediocrity, and instead filled with compassion and meaning. In a world where people must lie, cheat, and feign in order to get what they want, Gerasim is the only character in which honesty and genuineness prevail. Gerasim is also the sole character that grasps the deeper meaning in life and death. He treats Ivan with compassion and empathy, facing the idea of death with acceptance and composure. This juxtaposes Ivan’s other friends and family, who consider it a nuisance for him to be ill; they prioritize the inconvenience it causes them over his suffering.…

From reading the first paragraph of Notes from the Underground, the Underground Man portrays himself as “sick” and “wicked” (3). This shows how he is aware of his current state of being. Furthermore, he apparently has a sickness and does not want to consult a doctor as Dostoevsky writes, “I am not being treated and never have been, though I respect medicine and doctors” (3). This quote gives a sense that he lives under a rock because he is not seeking help for what he believes is a problem. He respects the art of medical treatment, but perhaps he does not have access to it. On one hand, relating this idea back to his name Underground Man might suggest that he is trapped underground. On the other hand, he might feel trapped mentally because…

Dostoevsky attempts to appeal to the emotional side of thinking by utilizing subtle, yet deep symbols within the novel, for instance the symbol and concept of time. We are constantly being told what time is. From the point when Raskolnikov wakes up, moving to enact his plans to murder the pawnbroker, even the time that it is when Svidrigaïlov plans to kill himself. The inclusion of time pushes the story in a chronological order, much like a order is naturally followed in life, and a order is followed in the justice process for apprehension of criminals (Rask.). In the introduction to chapter 6 we are given the text "Sometimes he fancied he had been lying there a month; at other times it all seemed part of the same day. But of that – of that he had no recollection, and yet every minute he felt that he had forgotten something he ought to…

In Notes from Underground man, Dostoevsky takes us through a period of reform and bureaucracy. The underground man has his own way of thinking, much different from the society he lives in. He has a forever lasting battle with his conscious. Even though his deprived conscious is for the better in general. He is constantly surrounded with hypocrites and feels as if he is being judged by every move he makes. In the first chapter, we find out that he is very unhealthy but he refuses to get help. This is an example of how he takes his self-conscious aggressions out on himself. His self-conscious has also caused other problems and resolutions on his view of society. He had different views on people. When he was in jail, he learned not to see levels…

The narrators in, Dostoevsky’s Notes from the Underground and Lu Xun’s Diary of a Madman, represent the harsh realities of the world that the public is either too afraid or too unwilling to hear. It seems as though both narrators themselves have characteristics that make them appear mad. Their rants are about either the barbaric nature and declination of society or the cannibalistic nature of the government. Whatever the case may be, they appear mad because the society in which they live in is mad. This alters their perspective, rendering themselves equally mad as their respective societies. The two narrators are simply a product of their environment; the former, destroys society through barbarism and ignorance while the latter describes…

Allow me to paint you a picture…. it’s a lazy Sunday afternoon, raindrops are pitter pattering on the windows, and Billy has nothing that he needs to do. So how does he spend all of his free time? Why, he pulls up Netflix and binge watches his favorite TV Show(s)/Movie(s) of course! Pretty normal, right? Now, would you think differently of Billy if he would be playing his favorite video game(s) on his computer for the same amount of time? Hopefully no, but in our society today, it seems that many people are thought of differently for playing video games in their free time while people binge watching Netflix is “normal.” People who avidly play video games in their free time are all too often automatically dubbed a “nerd,”…
