An electronic calculator is a small, portable, often inexpensive electronic device used to perform both basic and complex operations of arithmetic.
The first known tool used to aid arithmetic calculations was the Abacus, devised by Sumerians and Egyptians before 2000 BC.
Computer operating systems as far back as early Unix have included interactive calculator programs such as dc and hoc, and calculator functions are included in almost all PDA-type devices (save a few dedicated address book and dictionary devices).
Modern electronic calculators contain a keyboard with buttons for digits and arithmetical operations. Some even contain 00 and 000 buttons to make large numbers easier to enter. Most basic calculators assign only one digit or operation on each button. However, in more specific calculators, a button can perform multi-function working with key combination or current reckoning

In the late 1980s, early pen computer systems generated a large amount of excitement, and there was a time when experts thought pen computers eventually may replace conventional computers with keyboards. As envisioned in the 1980s, pen computers design was around handwriting recognition. In the early 1980s, experts thought handwriting recognition was going to be important with future technology. Nobel Prize winner Dr. Charles Elbaum started Nestor and developed the NestorWriter handwriting recognizer. Communication Intelligence Corporation created the Hand writer recognition system, and there were many others.…

A scientific calculator is a type of electronic calculator, designed to calculate problems in science, engineering, and mathematics. They have almost completely replaced slide rules in almost all traditional applications, and are widely used in both education and professional settings. In certain contexts such as higher education, scientific calculators have been superseded by graphing calculators, which offer a superset of scientific calculator functionality along with the ability to graph input data and write and store programs for the device. There is also some overlap with the financial calculator market.1…

"Calculators from Texas who?" That question was often asked during the first days of the electronic calculator industry, but as the market grew, Texas Instruments became an industry leader and a household name in homes, as well as in schools, offices and factories -- around the world. In the early 1970s, the daily lives of people throughout the developed world were changed profoundly by the advent of a small electronic machine that could per-form basic mathematical problems much more quickly and more accurately than they could be worked out on paper. Calculators expanded the math capabilities of everyone from high school students to businessmen. The original compact calculator was the abacus, developed in China in the ninth century. The young French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented the first adding machine in 1642, a clever device driven by gears and capable of performing mechanical addition and subtraction. The first commercially successful adding machine was developed in 1886 by William Seward Burroughs The "Millionaire," a machine invented by Otto Steiger in 1894, was the first adding machine also capable of direct multiplication.…

Computer engineering started about 5,000 years ago in China when they invented the abacus. The abacus is a manual calculator in which you move beads back and forth on rods to add or subtract. Other inventors of simple computers include Blaise Pascal who came up with the arithmetic machine for his father's work. Also Charles Babbage produced the Analytical Engine, which combined math calculations from one problem and applied it to solve other complex problems. The Analytical Engine is similar to today's computers.…
