the final product captivating. In the process of completing this assignment, I learned about how the media will present stories in a way that is convenient for the audience and keeps them interested. I also learned that this applies to me, as well.
I realized that I am constantly finding myself just reading the first few lines of a news story, yet getting enough information so that I can discuss it with others. If I had a chance to redo this assignment, there is not much I would change. The one thing I would change would be to remove the part where I wrote “(pictured above)”, since I later on learned from the feedback that people do not often read in the brackets. The second assignment I have chosen for my reflection is the module seven PSA assignment. I have chosen to include this assignment because it was interesting to learn about the different elements of PSAs, as I grew up seeing them, but never knew all of the components that go into them. I liked that this particular assignment gave you a platform to speak up about an issue that you believe matters. While doing this assignment, I learned about the tactics used while making a PSA that ensure it appeals to specific audience. I also learned a lot about the specific issue I chose to do the project on and how many issues there are that should gain more support from the media. I was very pleased with the outcome of my PSA, so I would not change anything if I had the opportunity to redo
it. The last assignment I have chosen is the module 11 movie review assignment. I chose this assignment because it has allowed me to view movies in a different way. I enjoyed doing this piece because I noticed new elements to films that I had never previously paid attention to. For example, I put more focus into the themes in the film and the style it was filmed in. Doing this assignment, I learned about how everything, from the characters to the plot, in a film connects to make an engaging final product. I also personally learned how large an impact movies can have on us. I noticed how, sometimes, the themes and characters can rub off on others and impact our lives. If I were to redo this assignment, I would definitely make sure to add a title. I would also alter my opening sentence, as I would add my name to the title, instead of the sentence.
Prior to taking this Media Arts course, I had a very weak understanding about the effects media has on our society. Although I did not have a good understanding, I thought that I had a much better grasp at the concept than I did in reality. The topic of media is much more complex than I, and many others, understand. I was slightly in denial about the amount of influence it had on my life. I now recognize affects many aspects of our lives, such as our choices, style, opinions, etc. A big turning point for me in this course was in module six, when we were studying advertisements. At that point, I realized how much power the media has and how strong its effects are. Even when we are not seeking media engrossment, we are still constantly under its impact. I am now a lot more conscious of the media all around us, even in places that it is not expected. I will also make connections between the media and our everyday actions. For example, I will walked into a store and noticed that some of the clothes looked similar to clothes worn by a popular fictional character. The stock of clothes that were comparable to the character’s seemed to be much lower than the stock of other items. I connected that because people saw clothes identical to a character they like, they purchased them. Sometimes when you are constantly exposed to something you enjoy in the media, it influences areas of your day-to-day life. Additionally, when I am reading pieces of media through text, I notice the specific way it has been formatted and formulated to appeal to certain audiences. Or if it features images as well, I will speculate how and why those specific images were chosen to go along with the text. Although written pieces seem quite simple, they are a lot more elements than one may realize. Overall, I have come to learn that the amount of influence the media has on me is far more than I previously realized.
