Unit 3 Writing Assignment - Survey of the sciences

Well pigeons and sea turtles are not the only creatures on this Earth to use a magnetic compass. But I found that sea turtles use inclination angle and intensity to follow certain routes in the ocean, they call these routes gyres. The gyre is known to be warm and have lots of food, but where the gyre is cold there is less food and turtles that follow these routes tend to die. Also a lot of these creatures tend to have a substance in their brains called magnetite, and apparently this is what causes the animals to detect the Earth’s magnetic field.

It has happened before - the geological record suggests the magnetic field has reversed every 250,000 years, meaning that, with the last event 800,000 years ago, another would seem to be overdue.

"Magnetic north has migrated more than 1,500 kilometers over the past century," said Conall Mac Niocaill, an earth scientist at Oxford University. "In the past 150 years, the strength of the magnetic field has lessened by 10 percent, which could indicate a reversal is on the cards."
While the effects are hard to predict, the consequences may be enormous. The loss of the magnetic field on Mars billions of years ago put paid to life on the planet if there ever was any, scientists say.
Mac Niocaill said Mars probably lost its magnetic field 3.5-4.0 billion years ago, based on observations that rocks in the planet 's southern hemisphere have magnetization.
The northern half of Mars looks younger because it has fewer impact craters, and has no magnetic structure to speak of, so the field must have shut down before the rocks there were formed, which would have been about 3.8 billion years

Research – The scientists had information that they had researched concluding that this shift has happened before, and it was every 250,000 years that this type of shift happens.
Hypothesis – This event happened over 800,000 years ago, meaning that this type of event is long overdue.
Experiment – The strength of the magnetic field has lessened by 10 percent, which could indicate a reversal is on the cards, based on observations that rocks in the planet 's southern hemisphere have magnetization.
Analyze – Earth 's magnetic field has always restored itself but, as it continues to shift and weaken, it will present challenges. In nature, animals which use the field could be mightily confused. Birds may be able to cope because studies have shown they have back-up systems that rely on stars and landmarks, including roads and power lines, to find their way around.
Results – The Earth’s magnetic poles are going to shift again, no one knows exactly when, but it is inevitable. When this occurs, north will become south, and south will become north. We will have to reconfigure all of the world’s compasses, and many if not all life forms that use the Earth’s magnetic core for navigation, will become lost and probably die

The Ice Age began 2.4 million years ago. According to scientists, huge glaciers were the cause of how it all began. They believed that this ice movement was the cause of leaving the rocks in different formations, rock scrape marks, the valleys, etc. This was the theory that glaciation was the cause of the ice age and that this was the evidence that left a mark on the earth that it did indeed happen. Other evidence found would…

The Earth’s magnetic field is very important, but it is unknown how much of an effect it has on the earth and the animals and people living on Earth. Some scientists believe that without earth’s magnetic field human life and other organisms would not have developed and would be extinct know. Few people know the effect it has on us and whether it makes a major difference in our lives. Earth’s magnetic field strength has been decreasing in the last few decades. So what kind of ramifications does the Earth’s magnetic field have on the Earth?…

This article explains how climate change has been rapidly melting the Arctic over the course of a few years. As a result, the faster the arctic melts the more damage will be done to the ecosystem, planet, and humans. A few examples of how drastically climate change has shaped the North are that the sea ice covering the Arctic Ocean began to decrease in size when it should have been increasing in size. Also, temperatures at the North Pole rose more than 20 degrees Celsius. These changes are causing polar bears to randomly stroll the shorelines of Hudson Bay in order to wait for the water to freeze. Researchers predicted by the year 2030 the Arctic may lose all of the ice. As a result, no ice in the arctic means ecosystems will be affected badly,…

This video is about the Earth’s magnetic force and its wavering. The molten iron in the earth creates the magnetic force around the earth. The magnetic force protects the earth, making it possible for life to exist on the planet, unlike other planets with weaker magnetic forces. Recently, though, scientists have discovered that the magnetic field seems to be faltering. The magnetic force starts near the South Pole and extends around the earth close to the North Pole and shields us from the radiation produced in outer space. When the sun produces solar wind the magnetic force repels the charged waves and the only evidence we have of the wind is the chemical reaction that causes the auroras, which occur at the North and South Pole. Using electronic devices and magnets scientists have discovered that Mars has no magnetic core but the crust has strong magnetic forces, and the magnetic forces prove that at one time Mars did have a strong magnetic force. If the magnetic force on earth was to disappear, like the magnetic field on Mars did, the solar radiation would eat away at our atmosphere and essentially blow away all of life. Evidence of the rapid decline of the Earth’s magnetism is proven in pottery, when the clay is fired in the kiln small pieces of magnetite in the clay align magnetism with the Earth’s magnetic field at the time. Experiments have revealed that what could cause the end of our living planet is when the Earth’s core becomes too cold to maintain the magnetism that it currently has. Scientists have made a startling discovery though; evidence shows that approximately once every 200,000 years the Earth’s magnetic field reverses from flowing from north to south, then back again. Some think that the weakening of the magnetic field may be the Earth preparing for another reverse in the magnetic field. Because of navigators’ interest in true north and magnetic north calculation’s have been made of the Earth’s magnetic field for the…

The most popular legend accounting for the discovery of magnets is that of an elderly Cretan shepherd named Magnes. Legend has it that Magnes was herding his sheep in an area of Northern Greece called Magnesia, about 4,000 years ago. Suddenly both, the nails in his shoes and the metal tip of his staff became firmly stuck to the large, black rock on which he was standing. To find the source of attraction he dug up the Earth to find lodestones (load = lead or attract). Lodestones contain magnetite, a natural magnetic material Fe3O4. This type of rock was subsequently named magnetite, after either Magnesia or Magnes himself.…
