IECE 4000 Math and Numeracy
Ten Pointer #3
1. Summarize the developmental progressions the author describes. What are key points early childhood teachers should keep in mind as they are growing young children to have a firm foundation in math?
The developmental progression for early number sense are counts all, shortcut sum, and counts on. Counts all is where the student will count all the objects that they are count whether it is physical or a representation of dots like on dice. They start with the first group and then move to the next group. After each group is counted they will count both groups together. The students next step in number sense and transitioning to addition is the shortcut sum level. The …show more content…
The student had a doted die and a numeral die. The student only saw on image on the numeral die so they always just added one to the doted die. After awhile one of the student fond out they the numeral 3 was the same as the 3 dots on the other die, so the child was able to learn on his own. The teacher did not correct for that was evidence of his thinking. Teachers are not just teachers, they are also researchers. They have to observe and watch all the children in their class to that they can understand how the students need help in understanding early number sense and help them transition into addition.
2. In your own words, explain the author’s two guiding principles at the end of the article.
Children have they own way of understanding numbers and often will choose to use representation for quantity instead of using numerals. Pictures make a lot more sense and give a visual for the children.
Symbolic representation is week at first for children. The understanding of the cardinal value is lost to students when working with numerals in
