Even if only 100 bombs go off, scientists say that is enough to plunge the world into a nuclear winter. The soot and debris that would be sent into the atmosphere would cool the planet, potentially thrusting the earth into a doomsday event. In 1983 New Zealand became the first Western Nation to become nuclear free and we still are to this day. However, this does not make us immune to the global impact that a nuclear war can bring. The cooling of the planet is one consequence, but there are many more consequences of a nuclear war. It can cause natural disasters such as a tsunami, the melting of the ice caps and glaciers which increase the sea level and drown many islands such as New Zealand. Not only that we would be harming many wildlife in the process of a nuclear war. Another consequence of having nuclear weapons is that money is wasted. The United Nation says to abolish world hunger it would take a staggering thirty billion per year. Yet one hundred and seven billion dollars is spent on nuclear weapons. One hundred and seven billion is spent per year to potentially wipe out earth while there are undernourished children and adults in third world
