“Numb”
Rock/ alternative rock music usually portrays the idea of getting revenge or “getting back up.” This is a theme of being powerful, as shown in the song “Numb” by Linkin Park. This song speaks of expectations and power in the form of voice, repetition, and foil.
Just by reading the lyrics it does not say who the song is about, even though most people believe it is about a teenager and their parents. The lyrics describe, whether it be parents, co workers or school peers, that the person is being expected to be like everyone around them. From being pushed to be someone they’re not, they are “Tired of being what you want me to be.” They feel hidden within the people around them “Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface,” when they just want to stand out and be different, be their own person.
The chorus of “Numb” describes how the person feels numb to those around him/her:
I’ve become so numb, I can’t feel you there
Become so tired, so much more aware
I’m becoming this, all I want to do
Is be more like me, and be less like you.
This chorus is repeated in the song multiple times to portray the significance of the problem. He/ she does not feel those around them, since everyone else is the same. If be the parent, like in the music video, they are trying to make there daughter be more in life than they did. And I know I may end up failing too But I know You were just like me with someone disappointed in you.
These lyrics show how powerful this song is in foil. The speaker knows what happened in the past to those that are trying to change him/her. Those people have failures and had someone disappointed in them therefore they don’t want the same to happen to others. The second verse of the song:
Can't you see that you're smothering me,
Holding too tightly, afraid to lose control?
'Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you, begins with the speaker feeling trapped within

This and the use of incorrect grammer, so common to rebellious teenagers, helps portray the message of the song, which is that today’s youth are prisoners of the older generations society, which alienate the younger generation and instead of looking for support and comfort, they thrive to rebel against these rules and law enforcement bodies, with the institution of society having no effect on the younger generation as they don’t comply and don’t want to reform. This creates the younger generations culture, arguing they are their own society.…

The song starts out with a strang questioning of reality: “Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, No escape from reality, Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see”. They first two lines are rhetorical questions. They help establish the state of mind needed in order to continue with the song. The third line is a metaphor. It means everything is crashing down on him, and he cannot escape it. It seems to conclude that he is caught between a dream and awakening. The next couple set of lines are being used as transitions into the main part of stanza one, “I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy, Because I’m easy come, easy go, Little high, little low, Any way the wind blows, Doesn’t really matter to me, to me”. In the third and fourth line repetition is used in order to keep the lyrics flowing. The boy thinks his life doesn’t matter to anyone, his life is meaningless and the Earth does not care what happens to him. He does not care what happens next, he just wants it over; “any way the wind blows” him, he will go and it “doesn’t really matter” to him anymore. The next three lines show intent to kill by the boy, “Mama, just killed a man, Put a gun against his head, Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead”. The boy has finally come to terms of what he has…

Coming from unstable homes, violent environments, and regularly abused, kids along with teenagers think the best solution to solving their problems is running away. They would do almost anything to out, often harming themselves in the process. “Runaway Love” written in 2007 by Ludacris featuring Mary J Blige represents the theme of struggle and displays the effects of apathy on kids (girls). It is about little girls, ranging from nine to eleven year olds, who are “stuck up in the world all alone”. They are forced to take care of themselves because their own family member does not care for them. The purpose of this song is that Ludacris is trying to get his auditors to understand that children go through struggles just like adults. Girls that young of an age should be relishing their childhood, but they are forced to take on the roles of an adult and manage on their own.…

The song starts by basically talking about how America is now a nation where media controls the way people think, in which, Americans are subc being brainwashed. This so by providing hysterical information about the war as well as using propaganda. Although the writer believes that the media is nothing but a biased propaganda, he feels that it’s not only the media that is causing people to become brainwashed. He feels that it’s the people themselves that are the reason why we’re so easily convinced. We believe and rely on everything that the media says, which often causes people to become someone who they’re not. This is killing individuality in America. The writer views individuality as a positive thing, so he says, “We’re not the ones who’re meant to follow” in order to promote and embrace individuality.…

Macklemore wrote this song from his perspective and his personal experience when it comes to the matter. In the music video, there is an image of the room’s door with lock which is shaking. The image discloses teenagers’ situation and their internal instability. The door is like the barrier adults set for teenagers to avoid them having contact with the real world. They are unable to hear different voices. Adults have already filtered all the information and just let teenagers know what they want teenagers know. They often said that they are aimed to teaching teenagers judge the rights and wrongs in the society. However, teenagers even do not have chance to have a comprehensive understanding of some things, so how could they distinguish what is right and what is wrong? How could they develop their own thinking? The adults think that creating a fake world is good for teenagers’ development. The primary source indicates that it’s very necessary for teenagers to break the barrier and have their own thinking. What’s more, the shaking lock exhibits teenagers’ instability. It means that teenagers are also desired for breaking the barrier and have contact with the real world. The song suggests that the best way for teenagers to change the situation is revolting. Glatz and Christy state that adults should learn to understand and adopt teenagers’ demand for independence and privacy (1370). Children would need more personal space when they gradually grow…
