I think nurse residency programs would be a great benefit to the nursing profession. Having the time to learn how to organize, prioritize, identify critical issues, learn the importance of social interactions with your patients, how to educate your patients and caregivers, and all the other important skills in nursing would be a education like no other learned in school. Being an active partner in the care of the patient as well as implementing changes in the workplace. As a nurse there are lots of opportunities that allow me to offer improved processes or care delivery. Opening that door every time will help advance nursing.

The IOM goal of 80% of the nurses be BSN prepared by 2020, is a goal that may forward nursing. Having obtained an ADN for my nursing career and going forward in a BSN program, I do see some aspects that are beneficial. The BSN program gives the nurse a more global view of nursing instead of a task-oriented nurse.
The evidence that supports BSN nurses is also compelling, i.e. a study that shows BSN has better patient outcomes (less mortality) in a hospital setting. It also produces uniformity among nurses. The BSN prepared nurse is more competent because the education provides a more comprehensive context. The health care world and the military are now starting to require BSN prepared nurses. The rational is BSN nurses will have a better base to make decisions in a more complicated health care arena. There are many programs available for ADN nurses to pursue a BSN.
