There are nine provisions in the Code of Ethics For Nurses. In these provisions, there are a few common themes; the most important being that the nurse should do anything in her power to advocate for the patient. Another common motif is that the nurse should be sure to take care of herself so that she can be at her best when caring for patients. In my opinion, the most important provision of the Nursing Code of Ethics is that the nurse will be accountable for every decision she makes. The first one is beneficence which is the ethical principle of doing good. Next, is nonmaleficence which is the ethical principle to do no harm. Nonmaleficence and beneficence together mean to do only good and not harm. The next principle is justice which means that equals should be treated the same and nonequals should not be treated the same. This affects the profession of nursing by making sure that all persons are treated fairly no matter their race, ethnicity, background, religion, or other deviations from what the nurse is. The next principle is fidelity which is to value faithfulness to one’s responsibilities. This affects nursing by showing value for taking responsibility for one’s actions. Lastly, there is the ethical principle of veracity which is defined simply as truthfulness. This effects nursing by making sure the nurse knows her responsibility to practice truthfully. All of these things lead to the nurse’s ultimate principle of accountability. The definition of accountability, in my opinion, is to take responsibility for your own actions. This affects nursing by making the nurse aware that she is personally responsible for each decision he or she makes on or off the job.
