Team Members’ Roles
A Nurse Informatics Specialist will bring nursing knowledge as well as an expertise in Information Technology. This combination is valuable when analyzing an EHR system in relation to nursing work flows. The NIS will lead the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of RHITs is expected to grow by 21% between 2010 and 2020, which is considered faster than the average for all occupations. This is due in part to the aging of the U.S. population, which is increasing demand for all types of medical services. The emergence of electronic health records is also creating new opportunities for RHITs with strong computer skills. The increasing use of electronic health records (EHRs) will continue to change the job responsibilities of health information technicians. Federal legislation provides incentives for physicians’ offices and hospitals to implement EHR systems into their practice. This will lead to continued adoption of this software in these facilities. Technicians will need to be familiar with, or be able to learn, EHR computer software, follow EHR security and privacy practices, and analyze electronic data to improve healthcare information as more healthcare providers and hospitals adopt EHR…
The NPDB was created by the Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986 to collect and publish information about physicians, dentists, and other healthcare practitioners to prevent incompetent practitioners from moving from one medical facility to another without disclosure of previously damaging performance, and to promote professional peer review activities. The ultimate goal of the database is to improve patient safety and quality of care (npdb.com).…

In the keeping current with nursing informatics trends, I would like to become proficient. I would say I 'm pretty close already. I will do this by attending all trainings and seminars offered for the informatics systems in use. I will also read and follow the directions in all emails pertaining to the informatics systems such as updates and downtimes.…

“Nursing informatics is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in nursing practice. Nursing informatics facilitates the integration of data, information, and knowledge to support patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision making in all roles and settings. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology.” (Staggers & Cheryl, 2002, para).…
As the nursing profession continue to evolve in a technology advanced environment, the need for informatics competency is deemed vital in order for nurses to execute their daily roles and functions effectively. It is necessary for all nurses to continue to upgrade their knowledge and skills to provide quality nursing care to all their clients. The benefits of possessing these skills allows…
Before a healthcare provider sees a patient, they need to know the patient’s medical background. The providers need to see the patient’s laboratory results, medications, previous illnesses, and any prior surgical procedures. Researching this information takes time, thus spending time with the patient is limited. A computerized management system will help eliminate the prolonged time wasted in searching for patient data. Increasing Quality of Care. The computerized management systems…
Nursing informatics is a branch of health informatics, where nurses are involved in the computer application and its implementation in various health care settings. The enhancement of information technology has a versed history in the nursing practice, and in the enhancement of health through its influences in the improvement of standard languages, strategy, and appraisal of information technology (Aathi, 2014).…
assessment tools Epic provides a nursing flowsheet built into the shift assessment for nurses to chart on any skin issues of the patient. Not only is it standard but it is also required for the nurse to chart every two hours on the prevention or repositioning of the patient. QI data has shown that repositioning and turning the patient every two hours will prevent HAPUs. Collecting this measurable data through Epic has helped improve health care services to prevent further HAPUs from happening. On the unit, HAPUs have significantly decreased from last year by enforcing the nurses to proactively prevent skin breakdown by continuing to use of tools and following skin protocols. The results and statistics from the QI data collected over the…
Electronic Health Records is the technology that I find most beneficial at work. It helps nurses, doctors and other healthcare providers to access patient information literally for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. EHR allows for a better coordinated care for all patients. The information can be transmitted immediately to other providers. EHR allows nurses and doctors to navigate through patients’ data that is far better than pulling charts on the cabinets and searching through pages of the chart to obtain one or two information. The beauty of EHR is that multiple healthcare providers can access the same records at the same time. There are some short comings about electronic health records such as when the system is off line, documentation…
Kortteisto, Komulainen, Mäkelä, Kunnamo, and Kaila (2012) stated that since the dawn of information technology in healthcare, the ultimate goals have been to help clinicians in their decision making process to prevent errors, to maximize efficiency, to enable evidence-based care, and ultimately to improve health and healthcare. Gradually, tools that support the clinical decision making process have been generally designed as clinical decision support systems (CDSS). According to O'Connor et al. (2011), the informatics nurse specialist (INS) understand the concepts and technology of nursing information management and can provide operational and strategic benefits to nursing organizations, such as seen through the implementation of the electronic…
Nursing, like many other professions, has seen information literacy change at a phenomenal rate. Nurses must be computer literate for daily practice. Information systems require nurse interaction to store patient data. These systems provide treatment suggestions, warnings, and teaching information for the patient. The nursing practitioner may spend as much as 35% of available work time on information management rather than on patient care (Yee, et al., 2012). Nurses must be able to retrieve very specific and sensitive information from multiple sources often during the course of one phone conversation. Nurses translate this information literacy into increasing leadership in the healthcare and academic…
