The Nursing and Midwifery School in the University of Stirling has exceptional learning environments in which to enrich learning experiences. The University is often described of as one of the most attractive in the world and surrounds a beautiful loch filled with swans, rabbits and squirrels adding to the relaxed learning environment. Within the School of Nursing and midwifery, we have innovative facilities such as the health skills lab, the modern library, 24-hour computer labs, bright lecture theatres and access to the Dementia services development centre located at the back of the Nursing and Midwifery School. In the skills lab, students have access to real life electronically controlled patients. It is a useful and modern practice area, set up to look like a real …show more content…
life ward where students can gain confidence in personal care, intermediate life support, injection techniques and clinical skills.
The teaching staff are a credit to the university.
We have had exceptional tutors in the past 3 years, who have had the ability to hold the audience in lectures with their fascinating stories, and stand- up humour. They are accommodating, enthusiastic and motivating by engaging students in group discussions, quizzes, games and online debate forums. Not only do they uphold the nursing profession, but many have aspired me with their knowledge, compassion and wide range of skills. The learning in class has been enriched with guest speakers such as Nurse practitioners, paramedics, doctors, cancer patients, former students and young carers. This has added to the depth of learning by not only studying the theory but by also hearing real life experiences. Alongside the taught theory, staff are approachable and adaptive to class preferences. I think having enthusiastic lecture staff, builds a cohort who are also enthusiastic and forward thinking about nursing. We are taught to question the way we do things and encourage health improvement ideas and
debates.
Outside of class I have been offered a stimulating variety of clinical placements including prisons, care homes, wards, community and specialist areas. In addition, I have had opportunities to go to the western Isles campus for a placement, and abroad to Florida in the USA in Semester 8. Opportunities like this have made the course exciting and unique. The university has a wealth of opportunities for the Nursing student in which to enrich their learning skills.
Overall I believe the Nursing and Midwifery School at the University of Stirling is a fantastic place to study. The school is innovative, motivated and set in stimulating learning environment. The skills lab is a fantastic learning resource, and the staff are enthusiastic, professional and forward thinking. In addition, the placements have been stimulating, and the support has been exceptional.
