Computer Diet Analysis Project
Nutrition is extremely important in living a healthy lifestyle. Consuming the recommended minimum number of servings from each of the food groups is a crucial need for one’s bodies. Without it, an individual could not complete every day activities such as going to work, playing sports, or simply walking to and from the store. These day-to-day activities require one’s body to be in good physical health. One way to become physically fit is to exercise regularly and to eat the proper foods that give an individual the necessary daily nutrient intake. In this paper, I will compare and contrast my food intake for three days. I will determine if my current eating habit is healthy and if I am taking in the recommended calories for a day. In addition, this comparison should tell me what affect it will have on my future health and wellness. In a one day food intake, I consumed about 1,500 calories. I believe that my dietary intake needs some improvement. Sometimes, I have a lack of energy which is due to my improper eating habits. My nutrient intake was less than the recommended range. I did not have enough intakes of vitamin A and E, but I had a significant amount of vitamin C. My daily recommended fat intake was 49 grams and I consumed about 80 grams a day. Lastly, what stood out the most was my nutrients intake of sodium, which was about 1,000 above the recommended range. The food pyramid analysis showed that I did not consume the recommended minimum number of servings from each of the food groups from the food pyramid. My grain intake was over what I should have for a balanced diet. My meat and bean intake was the closest to the recommended consumption. My vegetables intake showed that I consumed only 1 cup of the 3 cup recommendation, while my fruit intake was half of the recommended minimum. I did not meet the daily recommended fiber intake.     No statistically significantly difference in mean energy intake was detected between the first 24-hour recall and the equivalent day in My Meal Mate (an insignificantly different difference of 68 kJ was observed). No statistically significant differences in macronutrients were noted for first day’s measurements.     At 6 '0" and approximately 210 lbs with a BMI (body mass index) of 28 I am considered overweight and very close to being obese according to the website weight-loss.emedtv.com. I am positive that my current and very poor fitness and nutritional habits are the main cause of my depleting health status as well as my current overweight status. Asking me to explain my current fitness and nutritional habits is basically superfluous. My current fitness habit includes nothing more than the occasional golf or bowling outing, and it does not happen more than once every 2-3 months. My current nutritional habits are just as bad if not worse. Typically I only eat once or twice a day and normally they are very large portions of generally unhealthy foods. For example this past Thursday I managed to eat two medium pizzas from Pizza Hut in one sitting and on Saturday I ate two foot long sandwiches from Subway within about 40 minutes. My fitness and nutritional habits have been the same for years and I know that they are the reason that I am so close to being considered obese. There are a number of health risks associated with obesity. According to WebMD.com "Obesity is not just a cosmetic problem, it 's a health hazard. Someone who is 40% overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as is an average-weight person. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions".     Staying healthy is a hard thing to do, especially when you do not really have the time or motivation to pay attention to what you eat. I have a habit of buying and eating a lot of frozen foods, which includes frozen pizzas, beer battered fish filets, macaroni and cheese, and garlic bread. I also cook some boxed dinners like hamburger or tuna helper to save time on cooking. In my daily diet there is usually not a lot of fruits and vegetables in my daily diet, unless there is some kind of tomato sauce or sides of vegetables.
