Self-Assessment Nutritional Assignment
Demographics
I am a 34 year old male that is 73 inches (6'1”) and I weigh 254 pounds. I live by an American Nursing Student culture. This includes working extremely hard, playing hardly at all, and eating everything in sight to cope with the stress.
Medical History
I grew up healthy and active. I was always playing some sort of sport and working out. My parents and all 4 grandparents are all still alive. There are cases of heart disease on both sides. I am currently very shapely, but not in a good way. My family often comments on how fat I am. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2004. At the time I could not close either of my hands to make a fist. Opening a door was near impossible. My wife had to button up my military uniforms for me. I was eventually medically discharged. I can now make fists, but have pain as a norm.
Over the past 10 years I have put on around 80 pounds. I lost around 20 over the past 2 months with eating a bit better. I was down to 226 pounds when we moved back to Utah in 2012. My food habits were great for about 2 years before moving back to Utah. I was eating good healthy portions and exercising regularly. Other than those 2 years, my exercising and eating habits have been fairly short lasting with long periods between. I have a home gym, but I often find other things to do at home besides exercise. I am not a fan of the gyms because I don’t like waiting for the equipment and don’t like other people watching me. I absolutely hate cardio, but will play basketball or football for hours on end. I was often in the top 5 runners in my military group when running the timed 2 mile course, but I just do not enjoy going for runs.

Calculations
I have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 34.32 (height/(weight x 2) x 703) which is obese for my height. I am not a believer in the

“Medical professionals say that two-thirds of all Americans are overweight and excess weight has about the same effect on life expectancy as smoking” (Dugopolsk, 2012, p.151). But how can one tell if their overweight or not? The Body Mass Index (BMI) can help you answer this question. The BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. The following formula is used to find one’s BMI:…

A person’s diet is the food they regularly consume, for example a high fibre diet contains a lot of fruit and vegetables. A nutrient is anything that nourishes a human or animal for example iron is a nutrient if someone is a vegetarian they don’t get a lot of iron so they have to take iron supplement tablets. A meal is a fairly large portion of food that is served and eaten for example a roast dinner which contains vegetables, meat and potatoes. A snack is a small amount of food eaten in between meals for example a sandwich. Malnutrition is caused by people having to many or too little nutrients, this can cause poor wound healing, fatigue and organ failure. Over nutrition is where you take in too many nutrients, this affects energy balance and leads to obesity. It also affects health, for example high intakes of salt are linked to high blood pressure. Under nutrition means not getting enough nutrients and can lead to starvation, mirasmus and kwashikor. At 6 '0" and approximately 210 lbs with a BMI (body mass index) of 28 I am considered overweight and very close to being obese according to the website weight-loss.emedtv.com. I am positive that my current and very poor fitness and nutritional habits are the main cause of my depleting health status as well as my current overweight status. Asking me to explain my current fitness and nutritional habits is basically superfluous. My current fitness habit includes nothing more than the occasional golf or bowling outing, and it does not happen more than once every 2-3 months. My current nutritional habits are just as bad if not worse. Typically I only eat once or twice a day and normally they are very large portions of generally unhealthy foods. For example this past Thursday I managed to eat two medium pizzas from Pizza Hut in one sitting and on Saturday I ate two foot long sandwiches from Subway within about 40 minutes. My fitness and nutritional habits have been the same for years and I know that they are the reason that I am so close to being considered obese. There are a number of health risks associated with obesity. According to WebMD.com "Obesity is not just a cosmetic problem, it 's a health hazard. Someone who is 40% overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as is an average-weight person. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions". Some of the health risks that are associated with obesity include: Heart disease and stroke, High blood pressure, Diabetes, Cancer, Gallbladder disease and gallstones, Osteoarthritis, and Breathing problems, such as asthma. (WebMD.com).…

Upon quitting gymnastics, I hit puberty, my body drastically changed, and access weight has been an issue ever since. The birth of my two children has not helped my struggle with weight as I had gained 40 pounds with each pregnancy. As you can see, my outstanding weight issue is what will be discussed in this paper.…

My life is an unusual one. My work schedule has me getting up before the sun rises and getting home before lunch time. After I get home, my time is mostly occupied by my two year old daughter. Then, I cook dinner and usually go to bed before the sun sets. Because of the nature of this lifestyle, there is not much time for things like exercise or any other physical activity. Do not get me wrong. I do participate in some mild physical activity associated with chasing my daughter around outside on a nice day or inside when the weather does not cooperate, but I would hardly call that exercise. On top of that, because of my daily routine, I do not have time to really concentrate on what I am…

Chicago has been known for its violence. Many claim that it is due to class while others think it is due to race. Research of gangs typically does not include the role of race, though a closer look at gangs in Chicago tells a story of hatred between races. Frederic Thrasher, an experienced sociologist of gang research, followed Robert Park, a noted liberal and leader of the Chicago Urban League, in arguing that gangs were the problem of violence in the city and not race. Park says “gangs” came from the “city wilderness” without regard to race, creed, or color. Park along with Thrasher are both wrong since it is because of race that the…
