Nwoye sense of identity was challenged with the introduction of Western ideas into the Ibo culture. Nwoye started out in in the novel as a son of the mighty okonkwo, but the culture collision of the British colonists and ibo people affected nwoye to the point of that he betrayed his family. The reason for nwoye change in his sense of identity included his culture, religion and most important in all family. He did this for what he believed in not for what is right. We see evidence from the text when nwoye was going past the church everyday. This evidence supports my claim because it says “nwoye heard the voice of singing and it preaching.” p112. He said that the voice was confidence. That’s why nwoye wanted to be a christian.
The third reason is family sense of identity was challenged with the introduction of western ideas was because nwoye father grab him by the neck. Okonkwo did not treat him like a real son. We see evidence from the text when okonkwo said that nwoye was not his real son. This evidence supports my claim because “ Okonkwo, of all people, be cursed with such a son?” p114. Okonkwo said that nwoye was not his son his might cheated on him. He treated ezinma like a son and he wished that ezinma was a boy.
