O Wallace Landscaping Company Case Study
The change of the existing start pay will affect all the employees that has been with O’Wallace Landscaping Company for many years. The change of policy would have to be discussed by all the employees. The dilemma would be whether to make the change mandatory. It would not be fair to the older employees. This would create two different pay scales and cost more money to do the payroll. Older employees should be allowed the opportunity to decide what pay scale that will be satisfactory for the entire company. The idea does not seem to take that much debating if common sense would prevail.

In doing this research I believe that we should us a combination of Market Based and Traditional. We can use the ‘step’ structure of the traditional pay scale and base the numbers off of the market based survey from NAM. We would create grades with 5% between each pay grade and 5 steps within each pay grade that would have a 2 ½% increase with each step. Employees would get a 2 ½% pay increase for their first 5 years (unless they come to the company with experience and are started at a higher step). After 5 years we would hope that that person is growing in their…

Personally I would recommend raising the rate of pay for the open positions, it would cost the company extra money to pay the higher rates, but the alternative is even worse, the loss of business would be enormous and it could potentially cause the downfall of the company. They could even combine the higher rate of pay with a benefit package to bring in employees; I think overall the cost of these options would surely be counterbalanced by the possible loss of business. In the end, everything is based on the dollar, if they are faced with losing money; the companies involved are going to do what is necessary, to not lose any money, that, as they say, is the bottom dollar.…

My opinion on the administration proposal is that the two-tier system should be reviewed. Upon its review, new people hired would be introduced into the union system. Previously unionized employees should be paid less in contemplation of the pension scheme. my opinion to the negotiators would be that they respond to the position by development of an idea to have all the workers unionized. Logic upon the aspect of equality would also be achieved. This would ensure the workers are satisfied at their retirement. In the…

    1) I agree with Freddie. The payment system would be more effective as a piece rate. This should effectively increase the employees’ incentive to produce efficiently. The piece rate will encourage higher production. It will benefit employees for them to know that if they work harder, they will get more money. Under the other system, they could work inefficiently and get paid the same amount as someone who was working much more efficiently. This encourages the inefficient people to not work harder, and the efficient people to feel undervalued for their work. Under the new payment system, the employees are financially motivated to work hard in order to get more earnings. This system will also keep more experienced employees staying at work and dramatically reduce the waste in time and money for training and outfitting new employees. To encourage them to stay, Jones Ironworks needs to raise their wage to some extent. It’s rather worthwhile and reasonable to do it according to the Freddie Jones’ demonstration: paying with piece rate, the actual increase in cost per hour is only around 13% over the current cost, but it can save the company more than 10% in labor productivity and 6% of total payroll due the elimination of the waste in training and outfitting the new employees.…

A yard is the critical interchange point between manufacturing, distribution and transportation. Failures in yard operations can have a costly ripple effect across the systems they support. Problems such as line shutdowns, theft, late deliveries, high demurrage costs, trailer shortages, and spoiled cargo are just a few of the problems that can result from yard failures. Most businesses addresses these problems through manual methods such as performing routine yard checks, logging information about arriving and departing trailers at the gate, and recording each trailer move within the yard. Because yard operations are fluid, having up-to-the-minute location and status information about yard assets is essential to ensure smooth operations. Manual processes lend themselves to data entry errors and tend to be untimely. To compensate for unreliable information, companies typically keep a buffer stock of yard equipment on hand to prevent equipment shortages. This in turn, leads to greater yard congestion, higher equipment utilization, and higher labor expenses associated with managing more equipment.…

In our parents' day, salary was generally based on seniority; every employee in a comparable position earned the same, with annual increments and cost-of-living raises. Seniority was rewarded, youthful enthusiasm perhaps not. The obvious drawback to this system was a tendency for long-standing employees to become comfortable with their guaranteed salary and become less motivated. Additionally, there was little incentive for younger - possibly more ambitious and energetic - employees to shine since all they would receive as a reward for their efforts would be a pat on the back and the satisfaction of a job well done unless they shone brightly enough to be awarded a promotion.…
