Obesity In Children
Obesity has become a prevalent health problem in modern society for both children and adults. Nearly 35% of adults in the United States are estimated to be overweight or obese; concurrently one-third of American children are thought to be overweight or obese. Estimations have shown that by the year 2030 nearly 85% of adults in the United States will either be overweight or obese. This epidemic seems to be due to a variety of different factors, however, one of the leading causes of obesity in children, as well as adults, is inactivity. Children under the age of six have been found to spend at least two hours a day playing video games or watching television, and the amount of inactivity in children has been shown to increase with age. The time spent watching the television is not the only contributor for obesity in adolescents. The content presented on the television has an adverse effect as well. The study showed that the commercials shown on television have a negative effect on obesity as well. Children and adolescents view a 4400 to 7600 of food ads per day, and less than 165 of these ads promote good nutrition. These ads have been shown to be affective in getting children to request more junk food. The amount of time spent using modern technology not only effects the amount of physical activity being performed by an individual, but it also influences the nutrition of individuals. Good nutrition is imperative to a healthy life and obesity prevention for both adolescents and adults. Physical activity has a direct relationship with healthy weight as well as other health outcomes of children. It causes the child to not want to be active, especially if they have already started developing to becoming overweight. Do you want to be surrounded with a society filled with obese children? Obesity has become a big problem in America. Parents are not being careful with the amount of junk food they’re allowing their kids to take in. According to Daniel Wientraub’s article “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home”, he claims that parents are in the position to fight the epidemic of overweight children, not the government or fast food companies. I agree with Daniel Wientraub because parents should be held accountable for the obesity of their children.…

Childhood obesity has become an epidemic in the United States. Over the past few years overweight and obese children have increased at an alarming rate and there seems to be no slowing down unless some type of action is taken soon. “It has been estimated that roughly 60-92% of children play computer games daily”. (Papoutsakis, 2007) With the staggering number of television viewing, the role of food advertisers must be addressed as one of the causes of obesity. “Nearly half of U.S. middle schools allow advertising of less healthy foods, which impact students decision making of healthy food choices”. (CDC, 2011) Portion control has also changed for kids in the last five years. “ Portion sizes of less healthy foods and beverages have increased over time in restaurants, grocery stores, and vending machines. Research shows that children eat more without realizing it if they are served larger portions. This can mean they are consuming a lot of extra calories, especially when eating high-calorie foods.” (CDC , 2011) Another factor that is affecting obesity is children is the fact that most families in today 's world are way to busy to enjoy a meal at home and spend more time eating out on fast food. In summation, in today 's world, kids are not exercising like they should and are eating the wrong type of food as well as eating more to satisfy their appetites. Television and video game playing is a contributing factor because it takes away time that is needed to exercise and influences kids to make unhealthy and irrational choices concerning food consumption based on food advertisements.…

Abstract. Childhood obesity has become one of the most common health problems facing children in America. Results from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reveal that ethnic minority children in the United States are at particular risk for development of cardiovascular disease due to their disproportionate levels of obesity. In treating childhood obesity among ethnic minorities, practitioners need to be mindful of the cultural norms surrounding body size. Additional concerns that must be addressed include the effects of target marketing of unhealthy foods toward ethnic minorities and environmental deterrents to outside physical activities, to name a few. Strategies given to address the problem of childhood obesity among ethnic minorities include, increasing the child's physical activity, reducing television viewing and the adoption and maintenance of healthy lifestyle practices for the entire family.…

Obesity can begin at a very young age. Many children in our society are overweight, setting themselves up for serious health problems later in life. Type 2 diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart problems are just some of the risks. They get teased, criticized, and judged. In many cases, the problem is not the child’s fault. Being overweight may run in that child’s family, or their parents do not encourage them to be active and get enough exercise. Many children spend too much time indoors wasting away in front of the TV, playing video games, or spending time on the computer, and consuming high fat snacks, soft drinks and candy at the same time. The CDC performed a study in 1994 that was described in the book Fat Land; it showed that children who watched over four hours of…

About one in five American kids is overweight enough to be considered obese (Parr 45). Obesity being 20% or more overweight, is considered a disease because it is associated with so many health problems, like heart disease and diabetes. Being obese as a child usually leads into being obese through adulthood. “One third of adults are obese, and a third of these got that way in childhood” (Parr 53). That is why it is so important to keep kids from becoming overweight and to help obese kids lose weight. The increasing number of obese parents, technology, children having no supervision after school, and the unhealthy content of school lunches are to blame for the increasing number of overweight kids in the United States. A majority of the information used in writing this paper came from obesity source books, magazine articles, and websites devoted to helping children lose weight.…

In this paragraph I will be discussing three of the contributing factors to obesity in children, media, parents, and schools. Though parents should not allow the television to become their babysitter, some often do. Children, who are the most profitable sector in the media, are dragged into the unmerciful pull of the media. There are countless television programs and stations for children of all ages. With this wide variety, children are able to spend hours watching television which requires no physical activity, so children rarely, if ever participate in any physical activities outside of the school setting. This leads to inactivity which consequently, may lead to obesity. The media also contributes to obesity in children because of their junk food advertisements. During these programs, many food ads entice the children causing impulse eating. With the inactivity and impulse eating, children are more susceptible to become obese. To counteract the affects of the media, children need guidance from their parents. Parents have a major influence on the well-being of their child. They can contribute to the possibility of obesity affecting their child by cooking and buying unhealthy food and permitting too much time watching television.…
