Narrowed Topic: Causes of Obesity in Jamaica
Purpose: To inform about the causes an effect of obesity
Introduction: Did you know that Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions. It’s the plague of the 21st century.
Thesis Statement: O’Dane was a victim of obesity. He was a victim of bullying teasing and low self-esteem. This lead to him feeling very insecure about himself. Eventually O’Dane became an introvert. He no longer felt he could face his peers.
I. Obesity comes from the results of poor dieting.
A. Role of fast food in Jamaica plays through advertisement and other media.
B. Local medical officials say due to poor dieting the greasy foods, coupled with increasing sedentary lifestyles, have led to illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke and heart disease among the population.
C. The easy accessibility of fast food products (foods rich in fats and sugar).
II. Addiction to food.
A. Food addiction usually leads to low self-esteem. This can cause the obese individual to stop believing in themselves.
B. People who normally have a love for food tends to goes to food for comfort.
C. For some people, the same reward and pleasure centers of the brain that are triggered by addictive drugs like cocaine and heroin are also activated by food, especially highly palatable foods. Highly palatable foods are foods rich in: sugar, fat and salt.
III. Lack of Exercise
A. Obese individuals usually lack energy and the need to exercise. This lack in exercise then leads to rise in diseases.
B. The increase in fat would require a lot of energy to burn calories. This requirement would discourage obese individuals.
C. Because people doesn’t exercise regularly, people tend to become overweight over time.
