even though he doesn’t live there and George does. Vince is a lawyer and the boyfriend of Nina at the beginning of the movie. He was shown being Ok with George staying at Nina’s House in the beginning but as his Relationship with Nina started to deteriorate he became more sarcastic and insecure. It is a relationship that could be going nowhere. What happens later on really drives home this point for me. Nina also often talks with her sister Constance. Constance is much more useful finically then Nina and often tries to force her hand on who she dates. As she usually tries to hook Nina up with more successful people she barely knows. She sees nothing wrong with this behavior and thinks she is trying to help her sister. And finally there is George. George is a teacher at a school who teaches the younger kids. He is also gay. This is a very important quality for this movie. Early on George is dumped and seemingly kicked out of his home. He later lives with Nina and they develop a relationship that will drive the plot. George is unafraid to say who or what he loves as he is friendly and yet emotional as seen later on. What happens later really drives out all of the characters personality and exposes their true intentions. Nina is pregnant by Vince and hides it from everyone except George. Later once it is discovery Nina is pregnant Vince begins to act different. He becomes overbearing. He shows affection and praise to Nina he never previously shown. Appears as though he cared for Nina at a certain level. But once he found out she was pregnant with his kid he now wants to marry her. But this leads too Nina Not wanting to continue their relationship and instead decide to raise the baby with George. Nina finally decided to control the situation and made up her mind. The idea was that George and Nina Get along so well that it would be a better environment to raise a child. And everything seems good until George gets a call from his former lover to meet up. This call happens as Nina and George were engaging in slight foreplay. Causing them both to question themselves and Nina to question her relationship with George. During Georges absences Nina goes to Constance’s has where she truly thinks over her feelings. And after an argument with Nina, Constance says that Nina is playing herself. Nina believes she can Change George as in make him heterosexual. This instance of Constance being overly involved in Nina’s Relationship life actually benefits Nina as she comes face to face with her actually feeling for the first time. You get an understanding that as Nina and George’s relationship progressed Nina was Happy because she thought that her best friend relationship would turn into something more. She tricked herself into thinking this relationship was the best option for her. George was also emotionally busy as he was gone. He didn’t end up with his former lover but found someone else. This reinforces to the audience that he is gay and happy emotionally with his male partners.
This leads to the emotional climax as at George’s brother’s wedding Nina and George finally reveal how they feel to each other now. Nina express how she wants more from George. She would want to marry him. But George states how he wants Paul, George’s new lover, and not her for that type of relationship. The movie ends with a time skip eight years in the future. George is happy with Paul, Nina began dating a Police officer that helped her one night, and Vince is there with his girlfriend watching the play in which his daughter is in. Constance is later seen still trying to Hook Nina up with wealthier mates. Throughout this movies some of the physiological factors and theories that stood out were Instincts and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
The entire story was driven by instincts. Nina felt instinctively more comfortable with George than Vince. These was properly showcased when she choose to live with George instead of Vince. George’s instincts drove him to other men and this didn’t become a problem until Nina felt for George what George felt for Paul. Nina’s instincts tricked her rational thinking. Because her body and mind chose George to be there for her even though every member of the audience could tell that she would develop stronger feeling for him which was only natural but she should’ve known better. And secondly Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The hierarchy goes Physiological Needs, Safety and Security Needs, Affiliation Needs, Esteem Needs, and Self-actualization. Nina showed us this hierarchy as the movie progressed. When Vince became overbearing and mentally annoyed her she ran to George more for comfort which helped in her later decision. She felt more secure raising a child with George even though Vince is the father. She choose to stand with George even though Constance was against it as she cared more about her mental happiness then happiness by who she was affiliated with. In the end this story was one that touched on points about identity and caring for others. Most decisions made by the characters seemed quite
obvious.
