Female Protagonists in Modern Literature As little girls get tucked into their beds at night all over the world moms and dads read to their daughters. These bedtime stories serve as some of the first forms of information that girls use to form a view of what they can be when they grow older. As these girls turn into young women they have the choice to choose what books they read and therefore, what characters that they will admire. It then falls into the hands of authors who write for the young adult literature section to be responsible to create characters that are good role models, especially for females. When it comes to the relationships that Katniss has with others in the book, it is evident that she is trusted, respected, and cared about immensely by others. This is because of the traits she displays and offers to the other people in her relationships. There is a relationship that supports the claim that Kat’s conduct with others is defiantly appropriate for other young ladies to model after. The relationship between Katniss and Peeta Mellark is a very complicated one that takes the readers of The Hunger Games on an endless yes and no rollercoaster with the end of the book giving no definite response to a future in romance, alliance, and/or nothing more than a false bond based on convenience and survival instincts. Going back to when Katniss was eleven years old and trying to take care of her family by becoming the provider that she eventually did, Katniss and Prim were truly on the verge of complete starvation. When one horrible disappointing day Kat collapses from hunger and exhaustion in the rain. As she sits there she looks up at the bakery and sees a boy get slapped by his mother for burning a few loaves of bread then is ordered to throw the burnt bread to the pigs outside. Instead of doing what he is told he throws the bread to Katniss, who happens to be soaking wet sitting curled up at the foot of a tree. Immediately Kat grabs the bread and runs home to feed her mother and sister. That day Katniss received hope that everything would turn out alright. The boy at the bakery was Peeta Mellark. Coming back to the present, Peeta and Katniss are the District 12 Tributes entering the Hunger Games together. From their first television appearance at the opening ceremonies to their separate personal interviews, the District 12 Tributes come out on fire.
