The Hunger Games Book Citation

The first book of the Hunger Games is the spark that started the fire of love and rebellion. Katniss Everdeen, age 16, lives in District 12 with her sister, Primrose (Prim) Everdeen, age 12, and her mom, her father had died in a mining accident when she was young. Her best friend, Gale Hawthorne, age 18, was her hunting partner, together they helped provide food for each other’s family. During the reaping, which is a drawing performed by Effie Trinket, Katniss volunteers as tribute in replace of her sister. The male tribute for District 12 was Peeta Mellark, who had given her burnt bread when she was young and slowly starving after her father had died. They were then taken to the Capital to be prepared for the Hunger Games, along with 10 other
tributes from different districts. Their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, was a previous victor from their district. During training they meet a few other tributes named: Rue, Cato, Clove, “fox face”, Glimmer, Tresh, and Marvel. The night before the hunger games, Katniss and the rest of Panem, finds out that Peeta likes Katniss. Then, when they are in the arena, Peeta joins the “careers” in their hunt to find Katniss. During this time Katniss becomes allies with Rue. Sadly rue is killed after their attempt to destroy the career’s food supply. Next Katniss finds Peeta and they “act like they are in love so that they will attract more sponsors to help them. Close to the end the games, it is only Katniss, Peeta, and Cato. Cato is killed by what they call Mutts or mutations. The last ones left are only Peeta and Katniss, and instead of one dyeing they decide to eat poison berries together. Before they eat them the game maker, Seneca Crane, declares them both winners, and they both go back to their home. But President Snow isn’t happy about their act of love. They may have survived the Hunger Games but their story isn’t over yet.
